Edmund Gerald “Jerry” Brown Jr. (born April 7, 1938), a politician and lawyer, who has been serving as the 39th Governor of California since 2011. A member of the Democratic Party, Brown previously served as the 34th Governor from 1975 to 1983, and is the longest-serving governor in California history. Prior to and following his first governorship, Brown served in several state, local and party positions, including three times a candidate for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.
As the only son of Edmund G. “Pat” Brown, Sr., the 32nd Governor of California (1959–1967), Jerry Brown began his political career as a member of the Los Angeles Community College jerrybrown2District Board of Trustees (1969–1971), before serving as Secretary of State of California (1971–1975). Elected Governor in 1974 at age 36, Brown was the youngest California governor in 111 years.

Brown’s father was of half Irish and half German descent. Brown’s great grandfather August Schuckman, who was a German immigrant, settled in California in 1852 during the California Gold Rush.
Brown was a member of the California Cadet Corps at St. Ignatius High School, where he graduated in 1955. In 1955, Brown entered Santa Clara University for a year, and left to attend Sacred Heart Novitiate, a Jesuit novice house, intent on becoming a Catholic priest. Brown left the novitiate after three years, enrolling at the University of California, Berkeley in 1960, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Classics in 1961. Alton Crawford Brown was born in Los Angeles on July 30th, 1962. His parents were from a rural town in Georgia, Sir Alton Brown and his wife moved with their son, when he was 7, back to their home town. This is where Alton spent the rest of his days growing up. During his young age he spend a lot of time in the kitchen with his mother and grandmother learning to cook. Alton had a rough childhood at one point in time, his father committed suicide and later on his mother got remarried. While researching Alton Brown they don’t really say much about his childhood, they mainly focus on his college years and beyond into adulthood. The two documents contain very general similarities. They both have a bicameral legislature, which means that they have two chambers or houses. They also both have a Bill of Rights which showcases the rights that the citizens have. Like the U.S. government, the Californian government also has a legislative, executive, and judicial branch where, in short, the legislative branch makes the laws, the executive branch carries out the laws, and the judicial branch interprets the laws, among other things. In order for both governments to run smoothly, California was influenced by the federal system of checks and balances, meaning that no single branch of government can become too powerful. In addition, the state governor has similar duties to the president such as serving as commander in chief of a militia and having the supreme executive power (Cal. Const. art. V, § 1&7). Although, within the similarities, many differences can be noted between the two documents, ranging from minor differences to major differences.

California's education system is in dire need of reform, providing adequate funding to education has been a problem for decades. The “Golden Moment” in California took place in the mid twentieth century. During the governorship of Pat Brown, a Master Plan for higher education was adopted. This plan passed in 1960, it created a three tier system and aimed at providing universal access to higher education for all Californians. It was an innovative system that brought prestige to the state and helped manage the needs of the rapidly growing state population. The growth in population was fueled by the idea that California was the land of milk and honey but this influx caused property values to rise and consequently property taxes were hiked. California voters have the ability to use the initiative process to implement policy. While this is a unique aspect that allows Californians direct control in governance, it can make it difficult for the state government to provide enough funding. Among the legislation pushed by voters has been Proposition 13, it continues to have long lasting effects that impact tax revenue and budgetary decisions.
In 1959 his family moved to Long Beach, Indiana where he attended first, a Catholic Elementary School (Notre Dame), and then a private Catholic boarding school (La Lumiere in La Porte, Indiana). John then entered Harvard with aspirations of becoming a history professor. After graduating from Harvard, summa cum laude, after only three years, He then attended the School of Law at Harvard. He is a man of great stature. A bodybuilder, an actor and the governor of California. He has proven time and time again that to be the best, it takes hard work. This is a lot of what he bases his USC Commencement Address on. In the speech itself he focuses on what he likes to call “Dr. Schwarzenegger’s six rules of success.
