The American Civil War was a war fought from 1861 to 1865. Focused on slavery and state rights, the civil war determined what kind of nation the United States would be. Before and during the Civil War, the North and South had differences on economic issues. The North wanted an economic upswing that would break the southern slave-holding ways. These issues winded up following the election of Abraham Lincoln. The southern states optically discerned Abraham Lincoln and the Republicans making changes to their way of life utilizing free slave labor.
