Living healthy always starts in your home, and why not let it start by eating healthier foods. However, eating healthy doesn’t simply include avoiding fast foods or products with high sugars, instead eating healthy includes the types of fruits, vegetables, eggs, milk and meats eaten at home. Simply buying more vegetables and fruits is not enough anymore. Today, many of our local markets sell produce that is covered in trans fats, high calories, preservatives, and grown using toxic pesticides that can potentially harm the body. Not only do local markets tend to disguise their produce in what they call “a healthy option” but often rip people off for their efforts to attain a healthy diet. Luckily, we live in the U.S.A where it is an individual’s choice to pick where he/she prefers to shop. If you are looking for a healthy living, the perfect alternative is shopping at a local farmer’s market. In fact, our bodies need what they call, “good fats” in order to stay healthy. According to an article written by Kathleen M. Zelman, Good fats are “an important part of a healthy diet: They provide essential fatty acids, keep our skin soft, deliver fat-soluble vitamins, and are a great source of energizing fuel.” Good fats include things such as monosaturated fats, omega 3-s, and polysaturated fats that help the body. Not all fats are bad, in fact good fats can help you maintain a good healthy weight and moreover help you be mentally stable. In the market I found nuts and salmon, which are healthy fats, but still couldn’t find a single soda or a bag of chips. It was surprising to me that I couldn’t find a soda anywhere. Through life we have many different stages to where we are either settling down for a nice home cooked meal or we are constantly on the go, running around our hectic lives, eating very unhealthy foods. Especially in our college years, students are always on the go running to and from class grabbing a burger and fries from a campus restaurant or eating the microwaveable foods like ramen. Many people try to eat healthy, but always succumb to the stereotype that eating healthy is expensive and takes too much time. This is a common misconception because there are ways in which anyone can eat healthy and on a budget as long as they eat proper portions, eat the right kind of foods, and excessive.
But doing that every day when you work or are going to school, can catch up with you very quickly and before you know it you have put on weight and don't feel as good as you would like to. At the end of the day you feel tired and probably don't have the energy you need to finish up your daily activities, let alone go out for a run or to the gym. As you age, even as early as in your 20's, you will feel this effect even more because you are damaging your metabolism with low quality food. Your body needs more than just fuel to keep running efficiently. It needs the right fuel combined with daily activity to maintain muscle and good circulation of oxygen and nutrients to all your cells.
People in modern times tend to consume more oily, fattening, and overly processed foods compared to whole, natural, “organic” products. Not only are people eating more overly processed foods, but they are left dealing with the consequences that come with it. Obesity and diabetes are just the beginning of health problems that can be caused by poor diet.
Eating healthy changes you for the best. Healthy eating is good for the soul, mind, and body it helps with stress, depression, and clearing acne. We as a society need healthy foods to stay productive in life, and healthy eating is a choice why not make the best one.
Eating Responsibly To eat responsibly means to know what you are eating and knowing what you are putting into your body, whether it is healthy for you or not. It’s a sad fact that the typical American diet (high in meat and processed foods) is not healthy. There are a lot of different ways to stay healthy, but it can also be very difficult to follow a good diet plan all the time. I know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and I have tried to eat well before all of my classes. I include the necessary protein of eggs and sausage, and include a fruit of some kind.
Have you ever considered what is in the food you are feeding your children? Most foods that are bought at the neighborhood grocery stores are considered global foods which are packed with additives and chemicals making them far less nutritious than local produce from the community farmer‘s market. After much research, I have concluded that it is better to buy produce which is grown locally rather than produce which is sourced globally (from other countries). I think this is important because most people, like myself, buy global foods and do not realize how much better local foods are for the local economy, the global environment, and our personal nutrition. Nutrition is vital to the healthy of everyone especially children, so with the purchase of local fresh produce, it can ease the worry in parents of what children as well as ourselves are ingesting.

Previously to taking this class, I had never given much thought to my eating habits. I always thought of the way I chose to eat as one of those things I didn’t need to concern myself with too heavily now because I’m a young broke college student. The way I eat is pretty similar to the way most of my friends eat and when you live away from home, that seems like the norm for people in college. However, after applying what I’ve learned in this class to my life, I’ve realized that the dietary choices I make now affect not only my current health, but my future health as well. So overall, I would say that my eating habits are pretty bad, but I’m working on making them better.
