Eating Disorders: Anorexia Nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is a serious disorder that affects many people around the world. It is a mental illness in which the patient intentionally restricts their food intake because they fear they will become fat. Today, woman are constantly being told that they have to be skinny. Also, society almost always portrays women as thin, whether it is a model or a movie star. As a result, many women turn to anorexia; this is a direct result of the pressure that society puts on a woman to be thin.
Today’s society portrays women as perfectly thin. The media manipulates a women’s body in a way to accentuate her sexuality. “Society seems to expect slimness and connects it with sexuality (Savukoski).” The message this sends is that if one is not skinny than they will not be desired or successful (Savukoski). Many women turn to anorexia as a direct result of the pressure to be thin. Eating disorder experts are deeply concerned about young women pursuing an impossible and dangerous weight loss goal (Salter). Many young women strive to obtain a thigh gap. One achieves a thigh gap when they place their feet together and their thighs no longer touch, leaving a gap. This goal is basically impossible, but since a few modals have this gap women strive to obtain it. When the majority of people stand with their feet together their thighs touch. Only a tiny amount of people can stand like that and not have their thighs touch. The spacing between ones legs is based off of genetics (Salter) Even extraordinarily thin people may not have the right body type for this to occur. Experts believe that “exposure to online images of extreme beauty standards and the drive to compare does increase the risk of developing eating disorders (Salter).” Anorexia Nervosa h...
