In the movie, Easy A, a young girl decides to follow and experience the plot of The Scarlett Letter in her high school. She starts rumors that she has had sexual intercourse with a guy she knows. The rumor gets out and soon she is the talk of the school. The class Christian is then determined to save her and keeps her accountable for her actions, claiming that she will go to Hell. The girl then starts to get offers where she pretends to pleasure her other classmates in return for gift cards and coupons. After she loses her best friend and herself, she determines to fix what she had broken and tries putting her life back together by telling the truth about all of her sexual encounters. She has a crisis and no commitment. She wants to find out who she is in life but fails to commit to who she really is and hides behind a character in a book, Hester Prynne from The Scarlet Letter. By hiding she fails to commit to finding herself and lives her life through someone else. Marcia explains that Olive struggles with decisions. Olive is confident and close to family but also does things on her own. She wants to let a boy close to her but is fearful in letting someone in and wanting a close relationship. Marcia says that once she has the ability to make commitments Olive will achieve identity and overcome identity crisis. The status then changed to identity achievement. This is described when her issue of identity crisis is solved. Olive has had emotional struggle and has matured in her journey of finding who she really is. Marcia describes this as crisis leading to commitment. When Olive decided to pretend to sleep with numerous amounts of peers and when she started sewing the letter “A” to all of her clothes, she was dealing with crisis.
