In the heart of Capitol Hill, you can find a unique public marketplace where residents and tourists can shop, taste a variety of foods, browse different works of art, and even add a unique touch to their wardrobes, all while experiencing some of the friendliest people not only from around the city, but from around the world. Eastern Market has been a popular destination for thousands of people all year long. From a college student, to a visitor, to a congressman’s wife, there is always something appealing to any type of eye and taste. Since it was established in 1873, the market has constantly demonstrated to have a strong sense of community around the Washington DC area. The friendly faces, warm smiles, appealing creations and enthusiastic spirit, make it an ideal atmosphere to be around with friends and family. Like stated in their main website page, “Eastern Market is far more than a market, it is a community hub for the Capitol Hill neighborhood and a cultural destination for visitors from around the world” (“Eastern Market DC”). It being Washington DC’s oldest continuously run open air farmers market, makes this historical landmark a local destination for fresh food, hand-crafted arts and community events. For over 136 years, Eastern Market has been the only market to serve its original function as a public market and at the same time, connect neighbors, families and visitors from all over DC and the globe. You will not find shopping carts strolling around the streets, or popular brands being displayed along its isles; instead, you’ll find local produce goods and chatty and friendly vendors that are always eager to tell you exactly where your food came from. By walking, driving, riding the metro or the bus, Eastern Market is... ... middle of paper ... ... as well as my experience and the people I meet in such place, have proven the market to be the unofficial “town center” of Capitol Hill. You can find almost anything at Eastern Market, from the South and North Halls, to the farmer’s line and the flea market, you will never go back home from this market with empty hands. Weather it is pottery or art work you are looking for, or fresh seafood and floral arrangements, Eastern market has it all. I guarantee you will never leave your visit to Eastern Market without a smile upon your face. The sights, the smells and the people around it, will always make your visit a wonderful experience no matter what your destination in the market is. So if you haven’t visited Eastern Market yet, hop on to the metro with a hungry stomach, become once you inhale the local atmosphere, all your senses will come to live.
In Barbara Berlund’s Making San Francisco American: Cultural Frontiers in the Urban West, Berlund explains how San Francisco grew from a young settlement which grew rapidly thanks to in part of the California Gold Rush which took place in 1949. Of course with the growing of this small settlement came it’s conflicts and how it rised to where it stands present day. A primary factor which helped San Francisco flourish a ton was the influence from those who had power and chose what would happen throughout the city, for example the Big 4. Those who were wealthy did not make this city what it is today without the help of people who made up the middle class as well. Every establishment within this city set the social order as to how the inhabitants of San Francisco would go about their life in society.
When people think of Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, they think of crime and violence within the neighborhood. I myself have thought this about Bedford Stuyvesant before I did research and actually visited the neighborhood for myself. Bedford Stuyvesant in my opinion, has two different sides. The side the media portrays to us, the people, and the side people who actually visit/live in the neighborhood see for themselves. My visual representation above shows the two different sides of Bedford Stuyvesant. The first image shows the typical view of what people think of when they think of Bedford Stuyvesant, the projects. When people think of this neighborhood, they think of project buildings housing low income black families. The media portrays Bedford Stuyvesant as a
As strategy consultants of McCormick & Associates, we use Porters Five Forces Model as a framework when making a qualitative evaluation of a firm's strategic position (Appendix 1.2). These five forces determine the competitive intensity and therefore attractiveness of a market. These forces affect the ability of a company to serve its customers and make a profit. A change in any of the forces normally requires a company to re-assess the market place.
In 1890, the opening of the Pennsylvania Avenue Bridge spanned the Anacostia River to connect the community of Anacostia with the rest of D.C. Since that time, a lot of things in this marriage have changed. Anacostia, then a working- and middle- class area for whites and blacks, is today an almost entirely black community whose struggles with unemployment, welfare and crime. These characteristics are well-documented in the local press; the community, which remained a single-family-dwelling residential area long after apartments came to other parts of the District, is today host to most of the city's public housing and is zoned primarily for multi-family dwellings. Once, city planners envisioned lively commercial and manufacturing enterprises along the Anacostia River. They believed that from The Mall, the city would expand in the direction of Anacostia . Today, the federal government is the main business of the city and Anacostia struggles to attract investors and businesses 'across the river.'
In the novel Grand Avenue. Greg Sarris uses the theme thread of poison to connect all of his separate stories about the Toms’, a Pomo Indian family. He proves that the roots of a family are the basis which gives the family its structure, even if those roots are bad. In the Toms’ family they’re roots were poisoned from the very founding of the family starting with Sam Toms’. His poison was not the fact that he tried to steal a married woman away, but that he was filled with secrets, deceptions, and self hatred. His family was founded on these poisened roots and passes the poisen down generation after gerneration. The only way to stop the poison, or inner self hatred taken out in other forms, was to let go of past and talk about the secrets and lies. Once a person does this they are able to learn from their mistake , in a sense the break free from the poison. If Sam Toms’ , the founder or root of the family, would have broken free of his poisen by talking about his mistake he made, his whole family per haps would have turned out completely different. As a result of his secrets and lies his family was rasied to make the same immoral desisions as he made throughout his life. His family, like Sam, didn't take responcilblity for their mistakes, which spread the poison onto the next generation. Tracing the poison throughout the Tom’s beginning at the roots, shows just how important the roots indeed are.
If you ever find yourself in Baltimore there are some things and places you must go and do. First of all there is Lexington Market which stretches over two blocks. This centuries old market has more than one hundred and fifty stalls and vendors offering fresh vegetables, seafood, meats, baked goods and prepared foods. You can find some of the best crab cakes known to man here, you haven't had a real crab cake until you taste one without all the bread filling. The sweet meat of blue crab is held together by egg, a tiny bit of bread crumbs an more crab meat. Camden Yards is also a must see. It is one of the most beautiful baseball stadiums in the world. Instead of the traditional hotdog stands you will find pit beef sandwiches and Natty Boh. I highly recommend you go on a food tour if ever in Baltimore.

Farmer markets have always been around and a strong reason to believe that they will still be around long after our time. There are several reasons why this age old tradition still exitst today and revolves around a very common question, “What does a buyer find important when they are about to buy food to be consumed, or how the produce is grown/manufactured, processed, marketed, and distributed. Supporting farmer markets and ensuring fair trade among the dealer and the seller can help promote healthier lives while building stronger communities. There are several reasons to support a community’s farmer market event because buying true locally grown food can allows the buyer to have options to food that is picked fresh and tastes better than what is sold in the supermarkets. Another benefit to farmers markets is that the food is sustainable, flavorful, supports local farms, and also in some areas, part of the proceeds goes to the unfortunate within that community. With the addition of the food generally being more flavorful, locally grown food is adapted to the climate in which it was grown, and can remain fresh longer than that of an imported produce grown in a different climate. Mini Market Lupita is well-organized, and they do an excellent job of dividing the food products into separate spaces. For example, the bread is all located near the bakery and is stored behind a glass case, so you can see the varieties displayed. This organization provides a welcoming environment for the customers because it makes it easier for a customer to find food products in the store. In addition, to being organized Mini Market Lupita is also an incredibly clean store and the employees are always presentable. Occasionally they will also play enjoyable Mexican music in the store which creates a happy and friendly mood for the customers while shopping. These are all factors that contribute to the welcoming environment in Mini Market Lupita for the
I spent my first few hours in Seattle breathing in sea breeze and getting accustomed to the lack of sunshine. Having walked down the waterfront, I halted at the end of the road right in front of the Pike Place Market. Although I'd heard about the iconic market, I had no idea what to expect. From what I'd heard from friends, it's the ultimate destination for all types of fresh produce and oceanic catch.
Nowadays, it is not rare to see farmers markets scatter all over the country especially during the summer. As people begin to gain more knowledge about healthy eating, more farmers begin to set up tents and tables to sell their produce. No matter how cold it is or how busy people are, the markets are always packed with people. The large number of people going there might cause others to questions many things. How did these people know when and where these markets are opening? The answer to this question is short and simple: a blog or a website. Back then farmer markets are not well known within the community due to the lack of advertisement and interest. However, since technology has become more advanced, vendors take advantage of it and utilize it to their fullest. One of the most well-known farmers markets in the state of Washington is the Ballard famers market. This particular farmers market takes advantage of social media. They keep their customers inform of what is happening as well as introducing the market to their potential customers. In order to successfully convince people to come to the market, the bloggers must employ many techniques. Within this blog alone, the creators used pictures, colorful and creative designs, sidebar tabs, and rhetorical appeals such as logos and pathos to tell their targeted audience which is a diverse group of people that this market is a perfect place to be at when the sun is out, and a perfect place to be at if they want good foods.
The book points out that the insiders of New York architecturally designed the borough to have aesthetically pleasing lights which draw people into the city (Makagon, 2004, p.152.). Being in an aesthetically pleasing space that is described as “open” by Makagon allows for tourist to buy overpriced items almost without even realizing it (Makagon, 2004, p.153.). For example, the mouthwatering burger a five-star restaurant sells for thirty bucks, when the same burger for five dollars back at home. The genius business work in the city of Manhattan allows for the city to work the way it does, which is what Daniel Makagon attemps to convey through his book. This book would be perfect for a business class to read, so they can understand the complex behind the scenes action taken in order to make businesses (Time Square itself) work
Without a doubt, Times Square in New York City is a unique experience, but the image created by TV and movies does not show the gloominess that accompanies the euphoria of being in the Big Apple. The atmosphere is so exhilarating and exciting, you don’t even know what to do for a few minutes, but it is tinged with the bitter reality that sadness and melancholy also trail closely behind the positive. With most, if not all, of your senses being stimulated – sometimes all at once – Times Square creates a memory that will surely be cherished, and haunt you for the rest of your life.
Marshall Street, as well as people’s daily practices at this site, produce a consumer space,
where you will see the business area. An interesting part of that area is Wall Street,
