“East Central Europe between the Two World Wars,” written by Joseph Rothschild, is ninth volume of the 11-volume series of books written about the history of East Central Europe. Each book in the series provides study of specific period of time in different historical context and this particular volume concentrates on the countries of East Central Europe in the interwar period. The book is rich with detailed information about each state-nation that was established in the given period and it tries to identify important political as well as socioeconomic issues that were experienced in the region. It is helpful to mention that the series to which the book being reviewed belongs to, aims at providing the volumes as a single complete work as opposed to collection of books written by different approaches. All books in the series, as well as this particular book written by Rothschild, look into each country separately and tries to address the problems that are specific to the country or nation. I have to note that this book was published in 1974 and by that time only limited number of books that dealt with the history of East and Central Europe between the two world wars was written. Even if there were historical books they did not include the whole region of East Central Europe. Mostly, they were concentrated only in one specific territory and written by the historians and scholars who lived there. The interwar period and assessment of each country separately is significant from both political and economic aspects. Therefore, the book is important for any scholar or a researcher who wants to learn about the events that happened in the interwar period from less biased perspective. It might be one of the reasons why Rothschild thinks that the most important parts of interwar period is the fact of countries getting their sovereignty which would make them not dependent to great power such as Soviet Union. In addition, the book was published by the University of Washington, which has been important public research university throughout the history. This fact might also contribute the viewpoint of the book has concerning the Soviet Union. Nevertheless, it is always hard for historical works and interpretations to escape from political interests of a country. Therefore, audience has to bear in mind this fact, while reading any type of historical interpretation, including this particular one.
