“I overpowered the child’s neck and jaws and forced the heavy silver spoon down her throat until she gagged” the doctor describes. Then he sees that the tonsils are covered in a membrane. This is the last piece of evidence that the doctor needed to confirm that this child does in fact have diphtheria. She was trying to hide it from them all along. The doctor’s mission was a success. All that the girl needs now is proper treatment and the doctor can go home and enjoy the fact that he has saved another life today.

Hearing serves a very important function in our lives. Much of the time, it is taken for granted. We tend not to appreciate it, until it starts to fail. There are many disorders that can cause a difficulty in hearing and hearing loss. One such disorder is otosclerosis. This disorder deserves a significant amount of research. Not only because we are dependent on our sense of hearing, but because its effects are far reaching. So much so, that it is hard to comprehend how we could ever live without it. It has even been said that Beethoven had otosclerosis. Toward the end of his career, he could not even hear his own music (Goldstein, 1999). Its effects are devastating and are well worth studying.

Each year, about 2.1 million people die from vaccine-preventable diseases. Many children may not receive their necessary first year vaccinations because of lack of availability, religious beliefs, and safety concerns (Healy, Rench, and Baker 540). The dictionary definition of a vaccine is a biological preparation that improves the immunity to a certain disease (Healy, Rench, and Baker 540). Although all 50 States in the United States require children to be vaccinated to certain diseases before entering school, the states also have exemptions for these vaccinations (Lu 870). Parents often choose not to get their children immunized, and it has proven harmful to the health of the global population. It is important for parents to have their children vaccinated against diseases such as measles, mumps, and polio because it is important to promote the welfare of the human race (Parkins 439).
Perhaps I am overthinking the process of parenting, but what I can say is this- if I ever find myself considering parenthood, I want to be prepared for potential health problems. And perhaps deafness is not always a problem, but no matter what I would want my child to be free to make their own choices about what they do with their body, wellbeing, and potential
Several assistive listening devices can improve the communication ability of deaf children. According to IDEA, every child with a disability is entitled to have access to assistive technology (California Department of Education, 2004). The California Department of Education (2004) outlines IDEA’s definition of an assistive technology device. It explains that this device consists of “any item, piece of equipment or product system…that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of a child with a disability” (California Department of Education, 2004, p. 1).

A pediatrician is a doctor that deals with the treatment and management of a child’s injuries or sicknesses. Their patients include children from birth to the age of 21 years. Pediatricians treat many different illnesses like infections, birth defects, injuries, cancers, and diseases. Some more of their medical assistances would be a child’s diet and exercise. They are not only concerned with the physical issues at hand but also the mental problems. Some mental issues include social problems, suicidal thoughts and feelings, depression, anxiety, and developing issues. A pediatrician must have good communication skills in order to be able to make the patient feel more comfortable or if the patient has issues describing the source of the pain. Also, a pediatrician must be able to communicate well with an emotional or stressed guardian so that they can still understand what is happening with their child.
Needless to say, all children will likely have many different health conditions during infancy and childhood. For most children these health problems are mild thus they do not interfere with their everyday lives and development (Cohen et al., 2011). The conditions come and go. Unfortunately, for some children, the chronic health conditions affect their quality of life and calls for lots of hospitalization. Children with chronic health conditions present differently. Some are well while others are ill. It is worth pausing to note that learning to live with a chronic condition can be very challenging ranging from the affected children to the family members. This paper seeks to look into the chronic illnesses in children aged between 2 and 13 years. Under this topic, the paper will give the number of children affected by the chronic illnesses, the number of those who die and the top ten major chronic illnesses affecting these children. In conclusion, the paper will give the magnitude of the problem in the medical field and the total sum of money spent of these conditions.
