Some IE scholars adopt the three dimensions of EO, in their definition of IEO (e.g., Freeman & Cavusgil, 2007). Others definition of IEO is consistent with Lumpkin and Dess (1996) five EO dimensions (Sundqvist, Kylaheiko, & Kuivalainen, 2012). Much of IEO research is essentially EO research that employs an internationalization-related dependent variable (e.g., Knight, 2001; Zhang, Ma, & Wang, 2012). As such, IEO in this present study will be seen as “concept travelling”. This makes China's market a prime hotspot for companies around the world to target to try to grasp some market share and profits. However, China's unique and heavy emphasis on culture and strong government practices make China's market place a very difficult for foreign firms to enter and do business successfully. One example of a US firm attempting to pry into the Chinese business world is Home Depot, but this firm wasn't able to sustain business in the country. Home Depot failed in its attempt to enter China and it's important to take a deeper look into why this happened. Foreign firms that enter China must first develop a business strategy that is catered to the specific target country, and if it doesn't work that is okay, but you must at least then be adaptable to change that strategy, but firms should always try to show respect and blend in to local culture.

Though the United States has a mix of several distict cultures, most companies operate in the same manner. In fact, Americans often make the mistake of assuming that standard business models are the norm in other countries as well. For the corporate executive charged with creating an overseas operation, lack of local culture understanding and its influence on business methods will most likely result in greater start-up dificulties if not complete faliure.
