“Finding meaning is fire- and photo” was a photograph by a freelance photographer named Ron Olshwanger. This photo depicts a fireman rescuing a little girl from a burning building and it became an award-winning photograph in 1989. This picture became widely popular for capturing a jarring moment of a fireman trying to bring the little girl back to life. As depicted in the photograph, seeing the little girl with no clothing and covered in blood, and burned skinned made the photograph that much sorrowful and moving. Her pale lifeless body is centered on the picture directly focused on the fireman and herself. The content of the picture is a little girl being held by a fireman as she is being rescued by a fireman. This traumatic picture depicts a little girl suffer from being burned and her face is bloody and dusty from the damage that was caused. Olshwanger picture composed of smoke to on the right to tell the story through the picture and also to establish the reason for why the dying little girl was being held by a fireman. In the background, there is a ladder going up the building because civilians were in the upper level of the brick building. The fireman’s lips are puckered which shows that he was resuscitating the little girl on his arm and she wasn't laid flat on the ground, and it demonstrates the desperateness of the fireman to breathe some life into her without wasting any time. The young girl is the center of the frame. Her eyes are the main focus of the image, speaking to the audience about the horrific things she has been through during the soviet occupation. Her eyes are the primary center of the photo, dim green on the outside and blurring internal to a light hazel. Something is past her eyes; her intense soul appears to pierce through to your own. The father tries to educate his son in goodness, survival, and decency even though all such humanity has been extinguished. The fire has multiple symbolic meanings for the man and the boy. For the man the fire represents the love he has for his son because his son is his reason for continuing. It is also the man’s moral code, his way to refrain from turning evil and committing murder or cannibalism. For the boy the fire symbolizes the kindness he carries even when he has been exposed to evil. Since the boy was born after the catastrophic event, he embodies a sense of purity, an untainted fire within him. Consequently, the son is more naïve and trusting of others than his father. McCarthy's “carrying the fire” functions as a metaphor of knowledge and hope for humanity, the natural instinct to keep going and hope for something better along the
