During this essay I will be exploring and comparing two of Carol Ann
Duffy’s poems, “Education for Leisure” and “Stealing”. In both of
these dramatic monologues Duffy clearly portrays a certain persona,
the character in “Education for Leisure” is shown as a young adult,
that, because he has been ignored, is trying to find power by killing
living things. Similarly the character in the poem “Stealing” is
ignored and friendless and so resorts to stealing just for the thrill
of it, often stealing things that aren’t useful to him.
The character in the poem Education for Leisure is very egocentric, “I
breathe out talent on the glass to write my name” this shows that he
really believes that even the air he exhales is important enough to be
classed as talent and he writes his name on it as if it was an
autograph. He also says “I could be anything at all, with half a
chance.” This shows that he isn’t given the chance to be anything that
he wants to be and that he is quite ignored by others. This helps
explain why he goes on his killing spree, its probably because people
don’t acknowledge him that he wants that kind of power of someone, or
something so he isn’t ignored anymore.
The character in the poem “Stealing” is very lonely, when talking
about a snowman he once stole he says “I wanted him, a mate with a
mind as cold as the slice of ice within my brain.” This shows that
what he wants is a friend that is just like him, someone he can relate
to, because no one else could understand. He also says “Sometimes I
steal things I don’t need” He does this because he got a thrill out of
doing it the first time and it gives him a sense of power of who he is
stealing from. The quote “I sigh like this - Aah” shows the
satisfaction he gets when he is stealing, and the short sentence
“Mirrors.” show that he likes to see himself, and he sees it as a

Women have faced oppression in the literary community throughout history. Whether they are seen as hysterical or unreliable, women writers seem to be faulted no matter the topics of their literature. However, Anne Bradstreet and Margaret Fuller faced their critics head-on. Whether it was Bradstreet questioning her religion or Fuller discussing gender fluidity, these two women did not water down their opinions to please others. Through their writings, Bradstreet and Fuller made great strides for not just women writers, but all women.

Comparing Zeena From, Ethan Frome’s wife, from the novel Ethan Frome written by Edith Wharton, and Elizabeth Proctor, John Proctor’s wife, from the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller relate through their characteristics and relationships which demonstrates how the two stories are alike.
Anne Frank also known as Annelies Marie Frank was a sixteen year old girl who got murdered during the Holocaust. She was born in the city of Frankfurt in Germany to her parents Otto and Edith Frank. Anne Frank had an older sister who was three years older than she was and her name was Margot Betti Frank. The Franks were known as a very liberal family who were also classified as a middle class family since their ancestors lived in Germany. In 1933 the Franks decided to move towards Amsterdam since Germany was being overruled by the Nazis. While the family had adjusted to Amsterdam, Otto Frank was really focused on his business since he was new into the city. Anne and Margot were also getting adjusted to the school system and when they were well adjusted they started to have friends who were Jewish and non Jewish. Six years later which was in 1939, Anne’s and Margot’s grandmother decided to join them in Amsterdam as well and be reunited with her two beautiful nieces. She and seven other people had to hide in a secret annex Prinsengracht 263 in Amsterdam. Anne received a diary on her 13th birthday and wrote about all the little things that had happened to her throughout the day.

Felix Salingar from Then by Morris Gleitzman and Anne Frank both knew what it was like. Throughout the 17th century society revolved around a gender hierarchy that both men and women must follow. Many at the time believed that this hierarchy was instilled by God and nature, as seen in their religious books like the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer; both of which were to be taken very seriously. Growing up Anne lived in a very wealthy and happy home. Her father was a very successful man. He owned his own business and provided more than enough for the Frank family.
