Alexander Duff 1806 – 1878

Alexander Duff that usually called as Duff, he was born in Moulin on April 25, 1806, and died February 12, 1878, in Sidmouth. Born with a smart and diligent character duff takes his studies on St. Andrews University. He was ordained in 1829 and volunteered for missionary service in India. Duff missionary was successful the method that would be followed by many world wide Protestant missions. Duff stayed in India until 1863 although his term of service was interrupted by long furloughs during 1834-1839 and 1850-1855. Duff thinks that education was a key to a responsible missionary work and nation building. He focused on his higher education in English.

By the time comes Duff came to present the Gospel to the Indian people, he choose to work with the upper caste (Brahmin) because he’s planning to build an elite India Christian who would be versed in Eastern philosophy, Western science and Christian faith. Finally it starts from a small group with a high quality that was expected become the source of the evangelization of the Indian subcontinent. Duff also get some support from the best-known early Indian reformer which is Raja Ram Mohun Roy, and effect from the educational reforms of the British colonial government (1833 and 1854).

Duff as a missionary, he hopes that with the new style of education it might “undermine” Hindu society. For him a non-Christian religion was not that important. His method didn’t convert a lot of people, but during his work in India, he converted 33 people and they became founders of Christian families. ...sire to Duff and Duff’s faith on God. Although he was young enough he sensed The God’s heart for people. The reality of a vision from God confirmed his mission in life, josis response to a vision revealed to him by God proved similar to Isaiah's story, in the Old Testament.

God always give me the best thing to do in life and eventually we only need to follow His will. Like what God use Duff as a successful person, He used him to change many people of India. Through his school and life he showed many Hindus and Muslims the "one and only way". God, parents, wife, and Indian people all helped strengthen Alexander's faith. Would India be the same today if Duff ran away from God's will for his life? And the answer is no. From now on I wanted to follow what God ask me to do because I know that his miracle and mighty works and therefore my life wouldn’t be that pathetic.
