Dubstep is a subgenre of EDM (Electronic Dance Music). Dubstep is a diverse genre that takes its origins from many different types of music and various backgrounds.

Dubstep may have originally spawned from DnB (Drum and Bass) and other underground music scenes in the UK. Drum and Bass is also thought to have spawned other subgenres of EDM such as two-step and Grime (Joseph L. Flatley).

As for its name It mostly comes from just two different sources. The first half of the name Dubstep, “Dub” originated from 60s reggae and the second half, “step” comes from London Garage House Music (Katherine Doyle). The term “Dubstep” itself originated in 2002, first used by Neil Joliffe (History).

A program on BBC Radio titled “Dubstep Warz” spread the sound of Dubstep around the rest of the UK, and around the world. In 2005, the dubstep forum was created on the Internet. It went from just a few hundred to tens of thousands of members between 2005 and 2006. The Dubstep forum is credited for helping spread Dubstep around the world (Joseph L. Flatley).
