Drugs and Friendships in Songs

For as long as humanity has existed, the bonds of friendship have been well acknowledged and respected. Despite their strength, a growing number of these bonds have either been strengthened, or more commonly weakened and shattered, by drugs. Whether it is one as controversial as marijuana, or something as harmful as LSD, dangerous addictions like these have always been known to destroy relationships with time. With so much trauma, music is a great tool to be used as a method of telling people's' stories of their friends and their addictions. These themes are found in the songs, “Lean On Me,”, “Chocolate,”, “Shine On, You Crazy Diamond,”, and, “Cold Turkey.” The classic soul song, “Lean On Me,” by Bill Withers, which was released in 1972, emotionally conveys in just how strong a bond of friendship can be. As his first number one hit in America, Withers wrote it in easy-to-understand lyrics because, as a self-labeled, “Lyric Snob,” he believed in the power of simplicity and poetry with words. With these simple, yet powerful phrases, Withers sings the song as though he is in a meaningful, supportive conversation with a dear friend who is in troubled times. The first lines of the song being, “Sometimes in our lives, We all have pain, we all have sorrow. But if we are wise, We know that there's always tomorrow,” he continues to talk of how, no matter how bad life seems to become Hoelscher 2 for his friend, he will be there for him no matter what.
