Marijuana not only affects the bloodstream but it can also impairs driving because of the effect is has on the brain and our physical capabilities. This is shown in the video Drivers stoned on marijuana test their driving skills because it emphasizes how when under the effects of smoking marijuana, driver’s lose their sense of driving and are dangerous to themselves and others while on the road. It is displayed how when the driver smokes more and more marijuana, their driving worsens and they become either ecstatic and totally different from when driving without marijuana in the system. It also depends on the type of person because someone who is either new to smoking marijuana or doesn’t regularly smoke it while someone who smokes it regularly, has an easier time driving and it …show more content…
“[I]n 2012 there were 78 fatalities where someone involved in the accident (a driver, bike rider, pedestrian) tested positive for marijuana, compared to 39 in 2007.” Now because of this incident, many people are considering to overturn the amendment 64 and to ban the usage of marijuana again. It is also shown how 26.9% of seriously injured drivers were tested positive for the usage of marijuana. Researchers also found that “[p]er capita, marijuana smokers cause 18 times more injury accidents than alcohol.” All of this displays how marijuana is actually worse than alcohol or any other drug. Also, another reason how marijuana can ruin a person’s life and can put others and themselves in danger is when a teenager died on July 16th after a hit of synthetic marijuana. This just goes to show how dangerous marijuana is and how it can cost someone’s life. Therefore, marijuana can endanger society because of the effects it has on people and how it can kill them and also how it impairs people’s driving capabilities which can lead to the danger of killing themselves or killing
In the passage, “Driving while stupid”, Dave Berry makes the argument that Miami drivers are the worst drivers in the world. He talks about these radical drivers from all around the world; from drivers that are always passing each other, never looking at the road and doing something else, people who drive with their headlights off all the time, to drivers that think that the can just push through all of the traffic in their way. Dave Berry uses very unconventional ways to make his argument, such as humor and hyperboles.
In January of 1919, the 18th amendment, the prohibition of alcohol, was ratified due to progressive movements. It was soon repealed in 1933, when crime increased and issues spread throughout the country. The concept of “gangsters” was established and unsafe alcohol became apart of America’s diet. This problem is now evident in this country today. Marijuana, an all natural plant that is known to get someone “high,” or to alter the state of mind, has been illegal since 1937 when the Marijuana Tax Act was put into action. But, this has caused problems throughout the country, just like the prohibition of alcohol. Making marijuana illegal has affected the social and cultural aspects of America negatively, by increasing the crime rate, making our country somewhat unhealthier, and weakening the economy.
Marijuana is a drug that is harmful to a person¡¯s health. It has been found to have adverse impacts on one¡¯s mental processes such as memory, attention, judgement, and problem- solving (Butcher, Mineka, Hooley, 2004, p.415). Also, marijuana can interfere with a person¡¯s ability to think rationally and logically. Thus, the lapse in judgement caused by the drug use can lead to risky sexual behaviours and this may result in increasing sexually transmitted disease such as AIDS. Moreover, the long-term use of marijuana may cause chronic breathing problems and cancer ...
There has always been controversy about marijuana and the affects it has on health and the issue of legalization. Some people believe it is very destructive to one’s health, and yet others feel the complete opposite about it. Is Marijuana truly harmful to one’s health? “Marijuana, the Deceptive Drug”, written by George Bierson, was published in the Massachusetts News. In this article, Bierson determines that marijuana is harmful in many ways. He seems to think that it damages the brain, the reproductive system, and also contributes to the halt of production in the immune system. Bierson also tries to persuade the reader that marijuana is a “gateway drug” that leads to larger drugs in the future. However, by conducting research of my own, I have come to the conclusion that Bierson’s article simply lacks truth.
First of all, some people feel smoking marijuana can get hyper, which providing them the emotion of happiness, and helping them to see the world from a different perspective. However, marijuana will cause a lot of healthy problems to human’s body. Marijuana has many physical effects on human such as rapid heart rate, red eyes and dry mouth. Because the chemical THC will enter into the body when people are smoking it, THC will enter through the bloodstream to the brain. The chemical affects them to feel ecstasy and unreality; therefore, THC will make them feel more confused if people smoke marijuana for a long time. According to, “ Treat marijuana abuse like a health problem” (McMillan, 2007, July 17), it shows using marijuana can cause more serious health issues on human’s body such as bronchitis, emphysema, and cancer. In addition, using marijuana has also been linked to lung damage and affects the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. For example, if marijuana ...
The present situation is bad, undoubtedly; but few are the situations so bad that they cannot be made worse by a wrong policy decision. Therefore, we must acknowledge the fact that drugs are not legalized or else we would create an environment. Legalization of marijuana may seem to be harmless but it has many more negative effects on people and society. There are already treatment for diseases like cancer and epilepsy so why do we have to use marijuana to treat these diseases?
...e no harm to the society which depicts that laws are set by man and broken by man, hence there is need to understand the environment in which marijuana works in relation to other drugs in the market before either legalizing or criminilizing it.
Marijuana has an immediate effect during and for about 2 hours after smoking. With alcohol, users feel slight effects after just one drink, and recover depending on the amount the person drank, how much they weigh, and how much they had to eat before ingesting the alcohol. Immediate effects of use are slurred speech, decreased inhibitions, poor judgment, and lack of motor coordination. Marijuana causes red eyes, dry mouth, increased appetite, slowed reaction, paranoia, hallucinations, decreased social inhibitions, and memory loss. Drinking heavy amounts of alcohol can lead to a coma or even death. A person would have to smoke 40,000 times the amount to get high to overdose, so it is practically impossible. Alcohol is responsible for over 100,000 deaths per year. Marijuana kills less than 10,000 per year.
Many could argue that marijuana is destructive physically as well as mentally. “The National Institute on Drug Abuse says marijuana can cause heart irregularities, lung problems, and addiction” (Welch). “One joint can be just as damaging to [the lungs] as smoking at least two and a half cigarettes” (Ruff). According to Dr. Tom Wright, director of a substance abuse treatment center for adolescents in Rockford, “teens may be especially sensitive to marijuana’s effects because their brains are still being formed” (MJ Rebuttal). However, the marijuana legalization proposition would have tight restrictions and regulations by the states that would eliminate some of those issues, such as age. These facts are not consistent; the evidence is not backed from reliable sources. One institute is referred to, but more experts are needed to verify the information.
The legalization of marijuana has been a highly debated topic for many of years. Since the first president to the most recent, our nation’s leaders have consumed the plant known as weed. With such influential figures openly using this drug why is it so frowned upon? Marijuana is considered a gateway drug, a menace to society, and mentally harmful to its consumers. For some people weed brings a sense of anxiety, dizziness, or unsettling feeling. Like alcohol, tobacco or any other drug, those chemicals may not respond well with their body. For other people marijuana brings joy, a sense of relief, and takes the edge off of every day stress. For those who are associated with cannabis, purposes usually range from a relaxant, or cash crop, to more permissible uses such as medicine, and ingredient to make so many other materials. We now need to look at what would change if marijuana were legal. Benefits to the economy and agriculture, health issues, and crime rates are three areas worth looking at. Deliberating on the pros and cons of this plant we can get a better understanding for marijuana. From there it will be easier to make a clear consensus on what is best for the nation.
Evins states her opinion on the idea of marijuana becoming legal. In her report, she tells readers marijuana should not become legalized for many reasons where she uses various scientific studies to back up her opinion. Dr. Evins goes into great deal about several harmful side effects that come with smoking marijuana mainly focusing on the unhealthy effects on the brain. Further, she elaborates on the addictiveness of marijuana and the repercussions of long-term use, often comparing nicotine and marijuana. Deeper into Evins’ analysis she tells reader should marijuana become legalized mental disabilities will become more prevalent because in certain individuals the use of marijuana can trigger mental disorders. Dr. Evins then concludes her essay by re-elaborating her main points on the harmful side effects of using marijuana. Dr. Evins closes her essay telling readers, “As a society, we are going in the wrong direction on
The debate between prohibitionists and citizens who believe in the legalization of illegal drugs provide many arguments. Since there are many drugs that are illegal there are many different arguments on what should be legal and what shouldn’t. The biggest debate, and the argument that I will mostly focus on, is the reform of marijuana. Prohibitionists argue that marijuana has adverse health, safety, social, academic, economic, and behavioral consequences (Goldberg 183). Not only do they claim that it causes all of those consequences but it also can cause harm to others including family and friends (Rachels 228). The obvious argument in harming others is driving under the influence of the drug but proh...
Marijuana prohibition stands as one of the most unwarranted policies of the United States. Every year we are spending billions of dollars on the War on Drugs with little benefit. Data released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation show there were an estimated 1,552,432 arrests for drug-related crimes in 2014 – a slight uptick from the 1,531,251 drug arrests in 2013. Marijuana offenses accounted for 48.3 percent of all drug arrests. Most marijuana-related arrests were for possession of the drug. By mere possession, there was one marijuana arrest every 48 seconds in 2014. Including arrests for distribution, there was a pot-related arrest every 42 seconds. This prohibition makes no sense, especially in a country where alcohol use is completely acceptable. Many argue that marijuana use is much more safe than either alcohol or cigarettes, yet it has been illegal for almost 70 years (NORML).
According to Szara Braude, marijuana slows down reactions, causing problems with memory and learning, distorted perception, difficulty in thinking, and loss of coordination (Marijuana as a medicine 53). Many people use this drug, not knowing what they are doing to their body and how they are actually harming themselves by smoking it so much.... ... middle of paper ... ... Many times it is out of peer pressure that people try this drug to begin with.
“The one thing that unites all human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status, or ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we all believe that we are above-average drivers” -Dave Barry, comedian. The number of accidents over the last ten years have drastically increased, drivers are paying less attention to the road itself. Many individuals behind the wheel of a car believe that their driving does not affect the road conditions, however it always will. The driving habits of today are catastrophic due to the reasoning that the driving will affect other lives through reckless or distracted driving, and disobeying traffic laws.
