Dress code is a set of rules what one can or cannot wear. Most everyone has encountered some sort of dress code whether it was in school, the office or even a restaurant. Dress code in schools was established in 1969 by U.S Supreme Court. This case was Tinker vs. Des Moines Independent School District and involved several high school students that planned protest against the Vietnam War. The court made the decision that schools can enforce dress and can limit student expression. Now most school boards and office administration creates the dress code for their students or workers. These people against dress code believe dress code promotes sexualizing women. The hashtag “I am not a distraction” has powered the movement against sexist dress code. According to Huffpost, “It’s the statement that’s become a rallying cry across the burgeoning movement against inequitable school dress codes, a movement propelled largely by the young girls who are so often targeted by policies that label the parts of their bodies ― whether covered by yoga pants, spaghetti straps, gym shorts, leggings or tank tops ― as “distractions” (McCombs.) Many women and girls have been told that what they are wearing can be distraction to men which makes it feel that the dress code targets them. These people think that all students should be able to engage in the education environments without fear of being body shamed. This is also an issue because in many cases when dress code is broken by a female, she is asked to leave class, change or go home. This is hindering their education. These women also feel that dress code teaches young girls that it is acceptable for boys to misbehave and sexualize girls. But truly I agree with the “inbetweeners” because I believe that dress code is a double standard and certain dress codes need to be updated. I certainly think that it is sexist and is targeted towards women. I feel the embarrassing pain of the girls who had to leave class, call home and change It is hard to draw the line when it comes to dress code. The deal with something being appropriate and unappropriated is a matter of opinion and someone will also be disappointed in the dress code, but I think changing to is a good start to solving this issue. Do you expect a five-year old boy to be distracted by what a five-year old girl is wearing? Of course not. If you were to ask a child or teen what they thought about school, they would probably say that they dislike school for a multitude of reasons, two of them being: a misogynistic dress code and the stress of balancing schoolwork with the expectations of society. The American educational system is inadequate compared to countries like Finland in which the dress code is nonexistent and the curriculum is more flexible to human needs; it is imperative that we come together to assure Dr. Anna Hinton, director of innovation and improvement, that she can enhance the broken educational system.

Numerous people believe clothing is a distraction and when eliminated the school environment is more professional and gives a better education to a student. Authority figures consider the school apparel enforcements are constitutionally sound, not affecting the child’s right to freely express, and providing a professional and working setting causing a better learning environment and decreased amount of bullying due to clear differences in appearance. However, opposers disagree with the restrictive code because of its limitations on individuality causing students to conform, sexist ideas in the form of punishment and how forms of clothing causes a distraction, and influencing rape culture. Costs for an advanced educational environment, positive, and negative effects will be explored within this paper to determine whether or not the dress code is necessary for an advanced learning environment or limiting the student's ability to express themselves.

Dress code, probably one of the most talked about topics by teenagers. Most teenagers believe that dress code is “witless” or “incompetent”. Why do we think this? Well, most adults believe that keeping a strict dress code keeps us educated because apparently our clothes are “distracting”. Now I can see how wearing booty shorts and a tank top would be distracting, but how is wearing sweatpants distracting? If anything wearing sweatpants keeps us comfortable, because I know that being uncomfortable is way more distracting than wearing sweatpants. When I wear sweatpants I can lay back and relax while the teacher talks, but if I am uncomfortable I am more likely to move around and fidget with my clothes rather than listen to the lesson.
In elementary school there was a dress code, but it was not enforced, not even by the principal. One day after recess, a student was walking up the stairs wearing sandals and she stubbed her toe. When she hit the step, her toenail broke off and started to bleed. Catching a peek at her toe, it seemed as if it could be broken as well. Due to the blood and the possibility of a broken toe, she had to be sent to the nurse’s office right away. As the rest of the class went back to the classroom, the other students could not stop thinking about the accident, and how any one of them could have a broken and bleeding toe right now. In addition, all of the students knew that the situation was avoidable, although they were too late to help the girl with the broken toenail in the nurse’s office. The situation became even more intense when the girl’s mom picked her up and drove her to the doctor’s office. Two of her toes were broken from the hit on the step, and half of her toenail was broken off. The school didn’t get in any trouble, however, most other schools in the area do have dress codes that are enforced.
Both Male and Females have complained that the dress code is “sexist and “biased” toward young women. One teenager said that the school should be an all-boys school. Since the code only applies to women. Another student said that “it was humiliating to be pulled aside like an object” to be told that her outfit is inappropriate.

The majority of clothing women, especially teens these days are showing more and more skin than ever before. We see stories Social media has more stories of girls being sent home because of dress code violations. Maybe the problem isn’t the students, but dress codes in general. If we want the younger generations to succeed in the education system, we should utilize school uniforms. Uniforms in schools from elementary to high schools, will promote gender equality and facilitate student safety.
The final reason, and possibly the most important of the three to change the dress code is that by telling a students that they have to change, a teacher or administrator is putting the value of the other students’ education above the dress code offender. Most often, the reason a student’s are told to change because their outfits are too distracting. a pair of shorts isn’t harming anyone, nor is it offensive. Are shoulders and legs so arousing that it completely stops anybody from being able to focus at all? Then, what will the suspect think? He or she can’t wear what she wants to because the education of the male students in her class is more important? It puts a student in a very tough spot because they are forced to make the decision between wearing what they want or wearing something that takes who they are away from
