Dreams Deferred
Everything has a price; not just material items that one purchases with currency, but also intangibles that do not appear costly. For example, how much does it cost to get an A in school? It may not require money, but it undoubtedly requires hard work and dedication. This example is synonymous with achieving one’s dreams, no matter what those dreams are. Often in school, ambitious students must sacrifice another facet of their lives in order to achieve their academic goals. In A Raisin in the Sun, many of the characters must give up something important to them to achieve their own idea of success.
Everybody has his or her own dreams. Although some people may have homogeneous aspirations, no two are exactly the same. Hansberry's play, A Raisin in the Sun, reflects this concept by expressing that each character’s idea of the American Dream is distinct in its own way. In spite of the fact that each character's goal is different, they all have one thing in common; each goal requires a sacrifice. The way in which Hansberry uses language, characterization, and setting clearly details the overwhelming truth that the fulfillment of dreams comes at a price.
The foremost component of Hansberry’s publication that communicates her theme is language. The characters each have their own unique dialect, just as they have their own unique desires. There is also a clear disparity in the dialect between members of each race. The play emphasizes this disparity by having most of the Youngers use faulty grammar and often just broken English. During the 1960s, the African-American people were in racial situations due to their “lowered status”. They had no control over the strong beliefs in segregation, which “is characterized by a mixture of hope and despair.” (Nordholt) African-Americans, like normal people, had strived to achieve set goals. Unfortunately, their ethnicity was what inhibited them from accomplishing their dreams. In Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, the author conveys the theme of the seemingly trivial efforts of the African-American people in their individual pursuits for a satisfactory life lead each person down a road of self-discovery that reveals an indefinite amount of truths, which transform their promising hopes into unachievable fantasies. By using powerful characterization, Hansberry creates characters with contrasting personalities dividing their familial hopes into different dreams. With the use of symbolism, each character’s road is shown to inevitably end in a state where dreams are deferred.
A Raisin in the Sun is written by a famous African- American play write, Lorraine Hansberry, in 1959. It was a first play written by a black woman and directed by a black man, Lloyd Richards, on Broadway in New York. The story of A Raisin in the Sun is based on Lorraine Hansberry’s own early life experiences, from which she and her whole family had to suffer, in Chicago. Hansberry’s father, Carol Hansberry, also fought a legal battle against a racial restrictive covenant that attempted to stop African- American families from moving in to white neighborhoods. He also made the history by moving his family to the white section of Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood in 1938. The struggle of Lorraine Hansberry’s family inspired her to write the play. The title of the play comes from Langston Hughes’s poem which compares a dream deferred too long to a raisin rotting in the sun. A Raisin in the Sun deals with the fact that family’s and individual’s dreams and inspirations for a better life are not confined to their race, but can be identified with by people with all back grounds.

Even though south side chicago had a low amount of hope, the characters of Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, Walter, Beneatha, and Mama found a way to dream big. It led them to doing what they thought was right, eventually molding Walter into a greedy man during most of the play, Beneatha into an aspiring woman that demands respect, and Mama into an improvising woman who loves her
