Dreams Can Come True
“I think my passion for [flying] started when I was in high school”, Gary Chambers told me as I sat down in his beautiful home in the hills of Serrano, a very upscale, gated community in El Dorado Hills, California. He was wearing a tropical shirt and bahama shorts with a pair of Teva sandals on his feet. He offered me a soda and then sat down across from me. We were sitting in matching black leather love seats with a tan and gray granite coffee table separating us. Despite the fact that he agreed to the interview and seemed eager to talk to me, he seemed uncomfortable during our conversation. He indicated to me that he wanted to get started right away. I was given the impression that he was a guy that did not like to waste time, but instead liked to get right down to business. I started asking him questions and I could see his eyes light up as he was talking about his zeal towards flying. He was like a burst dam flooding me with the story of his life and how he became his dream.
He was just your typical high school kid until he decided to take Air Force ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps). Springing out of bed each day, showering and dressing as quickly as possible, he rushed out of the door, saying goodbye to his parents and hurried his way to school. The journey to school was not as bad for him as it was for other kids because he resided right down the street. He was not anxious to get to school, but eager to go to his Air Force ROTC class. Although he did not love the Air Force, his passion for flying was what motivated him to come to school early everyday and talk to the Colonel that was teaching the class. He was a dry sponge and he wanted to soak up all the flying knowledge that the Colonel had. Gary continued to probe the Colonel for erudition until he graduated.
After he finished high school, Gary moved on to college. He chose to matriculate at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago where he received his Batchelor’s Degree in civil engineering. The Air Force, he was hoping, would be able to give him the career he desired. Disappointingly, the position that Gary wanted was not available at that time through the Air Force.
Long, hard days of recruit training began for the army. Every day he was up at 6am, doing physical training, learning battle tactics and how to use weapons, lunch, going out to the rifle range, dinner, and then night lessons until 10pm.
Billy Bishop’s path to greatness was not an easy one. He encountered many challenges throughout his young life that recognized him as a fiercer fighter pilot and a true hero. Billy Bishop faced an incredibly tough task to achieving his dream of becoming Canada’s greatest ace. Bishop had a tough life at Owen Sound Collegiate. He would be the subject to many jokes and preferred the company of girls. However his anger and fists won him acceptance on the school ground. He was a good natured boy born on February 8th, 1984. In 1911, at the age of 17, his parents sent him Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario due to his mediocre marks in school which his father knew would not allow him to get accepted to the University of Toronto. Mr. Billy Bishop was an ace World War One pilot who was extremely devoted to being a pilot. Billy was a man who was loyal and courageous. The young, gentle, Canadian man was devoted to what he did, Bishop would practice flying and shooting all the time. “You’ve got to be good enough to get him in the first few bursts, so practice your shooting as much as you can. Davis Jr. Was born in Washington D.C on December 18, 1921 and he was the second of three children. The parents of Benjamin O. Davis were Benjamin O. Davis, Sr. and Elnora Dickerson Davis, but if you didn’t know about his father was a U.S. Army Davis was in the army for 41 years before he got promoted to a brigadier general in the fall of October 1940. At the age of 13 of Benjamin O Davis Jr life on the summer of 1926, Davis went for a flight with a barnstorming pilot, however if you don’t know what a barnstorming pilot was they were a group of pilots that did tricks in the USA in the 1920, that stunt pilots would execute trick with airplane for entertainment. As the reader can distinguish throughout the book, both men went in completely different paths after starting in the same position. The difference between both of their stories is the author’s positive role model and the other effects of the military academy. It does not have to specifically be the military academy to shape someone to be successful, but discipline and a father-like figure can make the difference. My father is fortunately in my life, and has shaped me into the person I am today. He has taught me numerous lessons that have gotten me to this point in my life. I am privileged enough to also have close successful cousins who often give me advice on how to become as successful as they are. With the help of a positive role model and a positive environment, the ability to become a good person, as well as successful can be obtained.
Philip was not much of a student failing and dropping out of his university and later joined a community college. So one day when the military came to his school and he enlisted himself to serve under the Marine Corp hoping to feed is hunger of adventure. First, Philip was sent to training camp where he learned the history of the marines, different war tactics and their basic weaponry functions. At this point Philip was very much egger to into the jungle and “fight for America”. After his basic training his time to enter the war came around he was sent to Okinawa where his group was stationed at. The days there grow long and dreadful as not action was seen for and long period of time but now just a couple of weeks after his group would be stepping into the war field. The group was given basic information of the war. Although it was more exciting then their train camp it wasn 't the war they were expecting, simply protecting their base camp for any enemy that tried to gain access to. Juan Trippe was born just before the beginning of the 20th century in 1899. He was born into a relatively wealthy Protestant family with his father being a Wall Street banker and his mother, a real estate speculator. Juan was named after his mother’s favorite aunt, Juanita. Later, he would change he would informally change his name to Terry which was more fitting for his Anglo Saxon heritage. Trippe’s fascination with aviation began at a young age while watching the conquests of early pilots such as Wilbur Wright. At the age of 18, Juan began to take flying lessons at Curtiss Flying School in Miami, Florida.
For many officer cadets at RMC the First Year Orientation Programme (FYOP), is often the greatest challenge they will face both in their lives at the college and in their military careers in general. It seemed as if he had found his place while in ROTC. The discipline along with the structure, it was as if he had found people who were like him. For me, this topic hits home and in my pocket. My uncle, retired Coast Guard Captain Brian Murray, flies for Emirates Airlines out of Dubai. Growing up with aviation in our family, I've seen and heard the best stories of flight, but it seems the best are yet to come. Every new dawn breeds a new idea of some component of flight that will lead to the best experiences offered in the passenger aircraft world. Personally, I have been flying regularly for the last ten years.
When a beloved family member dies the natural human reaction to cope with the depressing news is known as denial. In Hedda Gabler and “How to Paint a water Lily”, both Ibsen and Hughes suggest that men live in a fantasy rejecting reality to protect them from horrifying situations. While Hughes believes that this fantasy is a natural survival technique used by men, Ibsen believes that by hiding the reality of life man are driven to insanity which prevents the growth of a potential culture hero.
