October 16, 2010 is a day that Eric LeGrand, former defensive tackle for Rutgers University, will never forget. During a game against the Army Black Knights at Metlife Stadium , LeGrand made a tackle that would change his life forever. His dream, as a child, of being on the cover of Sports Illustrated would one day come true, but not in a way that Eric Legrand would have ever imagined. This tackle that Legrand made on October 16 would be his last tackle on the field, but he would have many more tackles to make in life. Today I’m going to introduce you to Eric Legrand. With the fourth pick in the 1975 NFL draft, the Chicago Bears selected Walter Payton. Paytons career began with a less-than-stellar performance. In his first NFL game, Walter carried the ball eight times for zero net yards. Although 1975 began with a performance that wasn't worth writing home about, the season finale did. From Kirk Wright to Tank Black, the list of “advisors” who have manipulated their relationship with professional athletes is reprehensible. Whether a player’s loss is from fraud or negligence on the agent’s part is irrelevant. It does not change the bottom line. The numbers speak for themselves; from 1999 to 2002, criminal fraud lost 78 NFL players $42 million, and this only includes those cases that have been reported. 2
Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Lucky Whitehead has had his NFL contract terminated after being falsely attached to a shoplifting crime in June. Reports emerged on Tuesday that he had missed a court hearing relating to a case in which he had stolen $40 worth of goods from a Virginia convenience store in June. Players like Lucky are being falsely accused everyday. The NFL needs to update their fine policy.
