Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, was born March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was an American writer, cartoonist, book publisher, and artist. His most well-known works were children’s books. These children’s books sold over 600 million copies worldwide, and translated into more than 20 languages by the time he died. I chose Dr. Seuss because I grew up reading all of his children’s books, and admired his imagination.
Dr. Seuss grew up during WW1 and developed patriotism that stayed with him all his life. He was a Boy Scout during that time and sold U.S war bonds. Seuss received many awards and honors during his lifetime. In 2012, Dartmouth College named its medical school in honor of Dr. Seuss and his second wife Audrey. They named it The Audrey and Theodor Geisel School of Medicine. In 1984, he won a Pulitzer Prize for his contribution over half a century for the education and enjoyment of America’s children and their parents. One of the biggest honors that he received was the Laura Ingalls Wilder award in 1980. This award is given to authors who wrote books that make a lasting contribution to literature for children (Editors).

Theodor Geisel influenced nearly every American who ever learned to read. Even today his books are being mass produced and read. The National Education Society marked a celebration on his birthday to celebrate awareness to reading. This day invites every child across the country to read Dr. Seuss books. In his writing, he has taught valuable life lessons. In “The Lorax” he teaches the importance of taking care of the environment. He has given different views on everyday issues while making it enjoyable to read (Thach).
Dr. Seuss died September 24, 1991 from cancer in La Jolla, California, at the age of 87. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered. Seuss was married twice and had no children. He never wanted any children “You have the children, and I’ll entertain them” is a famous quote by
