Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, is the author of my favorite childhood book, Oh the Places You'll Go along with many other children's poems. Dr. Seuss is easily one of the most well-known children's authors having sold over 100 million books (Kantrowitz). From personification to imagery to rhyming, Seuss knows just what it takes to make a great poem. Dr. Seuss uses literary devices such as rhyme, repetition, onomatopoeia, tone and personification throughout his book, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.
Then Geisel left home at age 18 to attend Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. When he was there he was editor in chief for the college’s humor magazine named Jack-O-Lantern. One night when he was in his dorm he and some of his friends were caught drinking in their dorm room in violation of the Prohibition law. For that he was kicked off the magazine staff but he continued to write for it under the name “Seuss”.
After reading this essay, I now see Seuss and his work in a different perspective. In one way I am disturbed and curious, but another part of me is inspired of the genius that Seuss is. He put a great deal of passion and life lessons into his cartoons and stories. I feel as if children’s books are specifically for children and to encourage them to learn. Theodor Seuss was born in Springfield, Mass. on March 2, 1904 and died on September 24, 1991. He graduated from Dartmouth College. Dr. Seuss was a children's author who target young readers. His first book was "And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street" and was followed by many other famous stories such as, "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" and to one of his most famous books "The Cat in The Hat". Dr. Seuss is a well know author world-wide.
As you may know from the picture books I’ve published, Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, etc., I am Dr. Suess. Though, everyone assumes that is my name, my real name is Theodor Seuss Geisel. I was born on March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Massachusetts on Howard Street. As a family of four, my father, Theodor Robert, was a brewmaster. My mother is Henrietta Seuss Geisel, who often soothed my sister, Marnie Seuss Geisel, and me to sleep by "chanting" rhymes remembered from her youth. After I graduated highschool, I went on to graduate from Dartmouth College in 1925 as an editor-in-chief of Jack-O-Lantern, and later studied at the Lincoln College of Oxford University in England. I met my wife, Helen Palmer, who I married in 1927, when I was planning to be a professor.
Scieszka began his love for books early on in his life when he and his mother spent time together reading. It was during these times that one of his favorite authors emerged. Dr. Seuss stood out because "he was the first author that I realized was a different person - that there actually was a person who wrote the book" (Scieszka). It was then that he decided that creating books for others to read would be entertaining. He did not give this idea much thought until after he became an elementary teacher. Ever since Mickey Mouse was created in 1928, Disney has been at the forefront of the cartoon world. Every youngster has a favorite Disney character or movie. Over the years they have created some of the best movies of all time. However, Walt Disney hasn’t always been successful. He survived bankruptcy in 1922 and had to rethink how he was going to approach his life. I think it is safe to say the approach he took was the right one. One of his first productions was an animated short film Alice’s Wonderland, which turned into what we know as Alice in Wonderland. Mr. Disney’s first attempt at a feature-length animated film debuted in 1937 after three years of production. His masterpiece of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is one of his most awarded movies. Following World War II Disney Production was in a substantial amount of debt. They needed to come out with a new movie that would win over the public of America. They came out with just the right movie, Cinderella, in 1950. This was their biggest hit since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs some 15 years ago. Because of Cinderella Disney Productions stayed in business and could go on to produce many more heartwarming movies.

Growing up in a time where animation and TV was making its first appearances, Walt Disney wanted to be a part of the sensation. Striving and pushing forward with his natural talent of the creative arts and entertainment, Mr. Walt Disney became one of the most well-known entertainers that is mentioned all around the world. His great animation and artistic works but also with his world famous characters and popular theme parks, the first one, Disneyland, being built in Anaheim, California in 1955.
When Seuss was in high school, his art teacher told him he would never draw realistically. After one art lesson, he walked out of the class and never returned. Ted went to Dartmouth College, where he was an editor for Jack-O-Lantern, the college humor magazine. After getting in trouble for drinking gin in his room, Ted began to draw and write under different pseudonyms, including Seuss. Seuss himself claims that he used the name for his humorous essays and drawings, saving the name Geisel for his serious novels (MacDonald, 2004, p. 3). When Seuss became a magazine cartoonist, he began signing his work “Dr. Theophrastus Seuss” in 1927. He shortened that to “Dr. Seuss” in 1937 after his writings in Judge magazine (MacDonald, p. 5), and that is how Ted Geisel became Dr. Seuss.
Dr. Seuss I took an unconventional approach in the topic I chose for my reading assignment – whereas most groups selected single novels, my partner and I opted to read a collection of short stories by none other than the notorious Dr. Seuss. Were I writing this essay on a “normal” book, I would be able to pose a question about the book itself and answer it in an ordinary sort of way. However, given the subject matter I have chosen, an essay on an individual book, though possible, would be a very tricky thing to do. It would be wiser, and probably easier, to respond to the man himself. My decision to respond to the man himself makes many more choices – what facet of Dr. Seuss shall I ask myself questions about? I think perhaps I first need to give some brief biographical information on the man to understand the background he’s coming from. In 1904, Theodore Seuss Geisel was born in Massachusetts, USA. I have not been able to find too much documentation about his childhood, but he certainly did not come from a terribly poor or terribly unsuccessful family… in fact, his family had owned a local brewery in their home town of Springfield for several years. Ever since his childhood, Geisel had dabbled in the fields we all know and love him for today… for instance, during bible recitals, he read the verses to a rhythm and often in rhyme. In High School he wrote many short essays and drew cartoons for the school paper, and even then he had adopted a pseudonym for himself – “Pete the Pessimist”. Upon graduation, Geisel began studying literature at Oxford university, as his original intent was to become an educator… even then, he punctuated his time at Oxford with his job editing and contributing to the “Jack-O-Lantern”, ...
