Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. And His Way Of Non-Violence

MLK, A True Hero “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” (www.brainyquote.com) Dr. King, a true inspiration, a true man, and a true hero. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was an inspiration to me because he gave people freedom and equality. Without him, blacks and whites would of probably never been treated as equals.

Do you agree that Martin Luther King was the most important factor in the helping blacks gain more Civil Rights in the 1960's?

Martin Luther King, Jr. lost his life trying to better the lives of African American people who, because of their skin color, didn’t have the same rights as white people in America. King was a man of integrity and passion with a vision of a desegregated society. He played a part in the Civil Rights Movements where he eventually went to jail because of his protesting, and he became involved in the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott.

“Imagine there’s no countries, it isn’t hard to do. Nothing to kill or die for, and no religion too. Imagine all the people living life in peace. You may say that I’m a dreamer but I’m not the only one. I hope someday you’ll join us and the world will be as one.” This quote is by John Lennon. I think it refers to what happened on August 28th 1963, a hot summer day when a quarter of a million people showed up on the steps of the Lincoln memorial. That day was the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, brought together by civil rights groups and religious groups at the time, king gave a speech to try and open the countries eyes about it. Just a year earlier, only 6.7% of African Americans were able to vote in the state of Mississippi. The goal of this event was to shed light on the political and social challenges that these people faced throughout the country.

Heroes, crime fighting people that save the world from bad guys and super villains. Some heroes might be like that, but not my hero. This man was a normal person that rose to a opportunity that he saw and took it. He help many people with their hardships of being treated differently. My hero is Martin Luther King Jr, he had many great ideas that changed history forever. I think that he did it all out of love not popularity and he did so in a peaceful way, therefore I think he is a great hero.

Thomas Jefferson once said, “All men are created equal.” These famous words soon became the basis of American ideology, and they outlined the new concept of democracy and American government. They represented what America stood for, nevertheless, these words were untrue. Although all men were created equal, they were not treated equally. Blacks were simply thought to be born inferior to Whites. This inequality was due to the excessive racism engraved in American society, which was rooted from the times of slavery in the American South. African Americans went through generations of struggle to get freedom and equality. They first fought for the abolishment of slavery and then the status of a citizen. However, this still did not create a society of equality. African Americans had to fight for social, political, and economic equality in a social movement known as the Civil Rights Movement. Many courageous people fought in this movement to eliminate racism and segregation, in an effort to reconstruct society. Of these people, Martin Luther King Jr., an African American pastor from Atlanta, Georgia, was one of the strongest civil rights activists in American history. He successfully fought against the status quo and as a result, he revolutionized American society.

Rebel, Merriam-Webster defines it as someone who opposes or takes arms against the government. Many Americans believe it is someone from the confederacy or someone who forcefully attacks someone or something they disagree with. This is especially common with the younger generations as most of what they see on the television and in movies is violence and governmental infiltration through violence. A large number of these children, adolescents, and young adults will never realize there is an alternative way of protest other than violence. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. found that way from the inspiration of Henry David Thoreau and his ways of transcendentalism.

The actions of Martin Luther king Jr. was necessary to acquire a real change in American culture. To civil disobey is the active, professed refusal to obey certain laws, demands, and commands of a government or of any occupying international power. It also a symbolic violation of the law, rather then rejection of the system as a whole. Martin King Jr use this a nonviolent form of resistance to change a society for the better.

Martin Luther King Jr was born on January 15th 1929 and got assassinated on 4 April 1968. His original name was Michael Luther King but his father decided to change it to Martin.
