Dr. Gregory House, M.D. is the Head of the Diagnostic Medicine team at Princeton-Plainsboro Hospital located in New Jersey. Dr. Gregory House, who is often referred to as just House, can be characterized as a narcissistic, cynical, and ill-tempered misanthropist. However, despite all these characteristics, House continually proves to be a natural medical genius that seems to never fail at diagnosing a medical mystery. House’s routine use of Vicodin, due to a previous yet chronic leg injury, eventually develops into an addiction to opioids. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.; DSM–5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) this addiction can be classified as opioid use
In medical school/pharmacology school, medical professionals are taught to treat severe pain with opioids. However, opioids should be prescribed with the possibility of future dependency in mind. Upon hearing the word “narcissist”, many people may come to mind--from the original Narcissus to celebrities, it is easy to characterize someone as narcissistic. However, the name Chris McCandless is extremely unlikely to be the primary response to this question. A determined and intelligent young adult, McCandless died in the Alaskan wilderness at just 24. A review of Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer mentions the unclear portrayal of McCandless being either an idealist or a narcissist. Yet, due to McCandless’ ambition and motivation, along with his ability to live life on his own terms, McCandless should be regarded a noble idealist rather than a reckless narcissist.
Almost one hundred years ago, prescription drugs like morphine were available at almost any general store. Women carried bottles of very addictive potent opiate based pain killers in their purse. Many individuals like Edgar Allen Poe died from such addictions. Since that time through various federal, state and local laws, drugs like morphine are now prescription drugs; however, this has not stopped the addiction to opiate based pain killers. Today’s society combats an ever increasing number of very deadly addictive drugs from designer drugs to narcotics to the less potent but equally destructive alcohol and marijuana. With all of these new and old drugs going in and out of vogue with addicts, it appears that the increase of misuse and abuse is founded greater in the prescription opiate based painkillers.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder Arrogance; an insulting way of thinking or behaving that comes from believing that you are better, smarter, or more important than other people. Arrogance is an attitude that can describe any individual with overbearing pride. However, American Psychiatric Association notes that people who are also narcissistic are frequently described as cocky, self-centered, manipulative, and demanding. According to Paul J. Hannig, Ph.D, Narcissistic Personality Disorder is “a pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy” (Ashmun). By examining the relationships, behaviors, and internal conflicts within, Willa Cather’s Paul’s Case, Paul’s “case” can be diagnosed as Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

One of the characters that portray Dr.Greg’s use of the id is his drug addiction problem, which started way before he suffered a leg injury; he abuses substances such as cocaine for recreational purposes despite the fact that he is a medical practitioner who knows the dire impacts they have on one’s health. His unconventional therapeutic drive, which strives to do what other physicians deem impossible, is also a reflection of the id character. His dependence on Vicodin, a narcotic pain killer, after suffering necrosis in his leg also shows the id’s need to satisfy his immediate desire of soothing the pain he experiences from the condition; however, the use of the drug is also part of the ego character, as it is a realistic medical intervention to severe pain.

The story of Christopher McCandless is that of an over-ambitious youth trying to find himself. Chris’ story, as told in detail in Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, ended tragically in his death within the Alaskan wilderness many months after running away from home with no contact to his family. In Krakauer’s work, he recounts interactions between Chris during his travels and multiple strangers. In this, one may conclude that Christopher McCandless is simply a reckless narcissist, who is selfish and privileged enough to think he can do and get away with whatever he wants.
