Fear can control anyone and everyone that open themselves up to it. It can manipulate the feeble and the strong, but fear alone will not prosper. It requires someone with authority to distribute the fear, but it also craves people who accept its presence. In 1950, Senator Joseph McCarthy fabricated and enforced a fear which swept through the nation at a remarkable pace. Edward R. Murrow, a famous broadcaster in this era, takes the nation by storm and exposes McCarthy. Murrow claims that the only people to blame for the McCarthy scare are the ones who choose to do nothing about it. This historic event in American history connects to the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. In both eras, fear roams through the streets and inside the minds of many, causing them to become vulnerable to the government. Some say that the aftermath of the McCarthy and the Salem Witch Trials stems from McCarthy and the government. On the other hand, the people of both eras allow for this fear to run through their minds and control them, and fail to stand up for what is right, thus putting the responsibility on themselves for the devastations left in the aftermath of the Salem Witch Trails and the McCarthy Trials. Fear and terror are found inside the minds of many during the Salem Witch Trials and again during the McCarthy Trials, but only people who allowed the fear to overpower them are held responsible for the source of this fear comes from the government. The government feeds off the innocent villagers terror, which expands its‘ power. During the Salem Witch Trials, no separation of church and state exists, thus creating tension and the strict religion the villagers obey. Arthur Miller, the author of The Crucible, portrays life in Salem during the trials and... ... middle of paper ... ... no power when it has no people to control. One must also be educated about history, because many people during McCarthy’s time were not aware of the Salem Witch Trials. More than Arthur Miller should have seen the correspondences between Salem and McCarthy because the only way to avoid history repeating itself requires education of the past. The devastation left in the wake of the Salem Witch Trials and the McCarthy Trials can be blamed on the people, not the government, for allowing the fear to control them and for not standing up and presenting a voice from the people. Both trials had the same cause and can be prevented in the distant future, as long as people stay in control of their life and have a voice when necessary. Without these characteristics, someone similar to McCarthy will enforce fear upon people, become educated, have control, and have a voice.
