Double Displacement Reaction Lab Report

INTRODUCTION This report discusses several different types of chemical reactions that were conducted in a lab. A chemical reaction is when two or more chemicals interact to form a new substance or rearrange the molecules within the substances. There are many signs that indicate when a chemical reaction has occurred. These changes include: a colour change, a gas being formed, a solid being formed, a change in temperature, precipitates are formed, a change in smell, light being emitted, a change in mass or volume, a change in conductivity, a change in boiling and/or melting point, and a change in taste. In the lab, thirteen different chemical reaction were conducted. Five of these reactions were single displacement reactions. A single displacement reaction is a reaction in which an element …show more content…

Two reactions in the lab were double displacement reactions. A double displacement reaction is a chemical reaction in which two compounds react and the anion and cation of the two reactants switch positions. An example of this from the lab of a double displacement reaction is sodium chloride (NaCl) reacting with silver nitrate (AgNO3) to make sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and silver chloride (AgCl). Two reactions in the lab where decomposition reactions. A decomposition reaction is a reaction in which a compound breaks down into two or more elements. An example from this is hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) using manganese dioxide (MnO2) to make water (H2O) and oxygen (O2). Two reactions in the lab were synthesis reactions. A synthesis reaction is a reaction in which two or more elements react to create a compound. An example from this in the lab is copper (I) [CU(I)] reacting with oxygen (O2) using heat to make copper oxide [Cu(II)O) Finally, two reactions were acid/base reactions. Acid/base reaction is simply a reaction that contains an acid and a base. An example from this in the lab is hydrochloric acid (HCl) reacting with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to make sodium chloride (NaCl)
