Double Consciousness In He Who Endures By Bill James's The Sky Is Gray

The idea of double consciousness, as defined by DuBois, can be seen in fleeting moments in both He Who Endures by Bill Harris and The Sky Is Gray by Ernest Gaines. When one compares the thought of double consciousness with the modern perception of a hyphenated existence, one can see that they both view the cultural identity ( African American) as one of a dual nature, but the terms differ in their value judgments of this cultural duality. Depending on how one values this cultural duality, as evidenced in both of the aforementioned works, it can alter the meaning of the works. When the people laugh at these kids, they are exemplifying an implicit social view of the African Americans: it’s one of contemptuous amusement for the people on the bus. James plays into this negative view of African Americans by pretending to hit her and having the people laugh at them again when the girl ducks down beside her mother (232). Emperor interrupts his own recitation to break the fourth wall and address the audience. He’s conscious of how the audience will perceive him; the audience is assuredly White because Emperor tells the audience “you can call me Shields Green if that makes you more comfortable”(Harris 508). African Americans would not be uncomfortable with a Black man’s nickname being “Emperor”. They’d be used to odd nicknames during this time period due to slavery, so it makes sense that it’s a primarily White audience. It would make more sense that a White audience would be uncomfortable with a Black man with a royal title as a nickname.
