Marijuana is at the forefront of many conversations due to the recent controversial legislation decriminalizing recreational use. However, marijuana has always been a topic of interest in American culture, whether it’s medical uses, recreational use, or just a cheap material to make products. Throughout American history there have been many different public opinions about marijuana; some very formulated and some a little ridiculous. Prior to 1900 hemp was used mainly as a building material in America. People used the dried stems of the marijuana plant to make things such as rope, sails and even clothing. It was such a main cash crop in Virgin that in 1619 their state government passed legislation requiring every farmer to grow hemp. The marijuana business is booming in Colorado, a $2.1 billion industry already, making several new millionaires, soon to billionaires, and with 37% of all sales going to the state in taxes they aren’t doing too bad either. As you’ve read marijuana has always been a topic of interest in American culture, whether for its medicinal uses, recreational use, or just a cheap material to make products. Whether it has been legal or not has depended largely upon the public opinion. It is interesting to note that the government itself has changed its mind from mandatory growing to minimum-mandatory sentencing for possession. Throughout the years things have come and gone, but apparently America doesn’t want marijuana to go anywhere, especially with the new recreational laws being passed that I discussed earlier in this paper.
