Donna McAleer: For the people, for the politics Rob Bishop, the current representative for Utah’s first congressional district is a life-long resident of the First District, with the exception of two years he spent in Germany while serving a mission for the LDS church. Rob is married to former Miss Brigham City. They have five children: Shule, Jarom, Zenock, Maren, and Jashon. Before becoming a representative, Rob was active in Community Theater, which is how he met his wife many years ago. He has served sixteen years in the state legislature, including as Majority leader and the unanimously elected Speaker of the House. During her years in uniform, Donna was stationed in Wurzburg, Germany and served as a platoon leader, company executive officer, and deputy public affairs officer with various units in the US Army’s 3rd Infantry Division and 7th Corps. In 1991, Donna left the service to pursue an MBA at the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. She’s spent many years as a management consultant before joining, GenRad, a leading producer of electronic test equipment. At GenRad, she was responsible for the development and implementation of a global logistics and customer support strategy. In 2000, Donna left the corporate world, and moved to Park City, Utah, to fulfil a lifelong dream: training to represent the United States in the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Bobsled. She called him a “guardian of gridlock” who helped shut down the government last year. Rob defended himself, saying he protects Utah values in Washington, and is about to become chairman of the Natural Resources Committee, which would give him power to solve longtime gridlock over federal lands management. The first question of the debate was: “Coordinated military strikes in Syria led by the United States aimed at the Islamic State known as ISIS many military officials say that it cannot be solved with just air forces. How and where would you draw the line in military action”? Donna responded first saying that there needs to be a long debate and discussion about this in Washington. She says that when we commit forces we need to not only understand the short-term consequences, but long-term as well. She says that the answer in the Middle East, “is not a military one, it’s a political one”. Her reasoning is that Syria is unknown to us. With its unsupported territory, and international community that wants action but is too slow to move it’s a threat for the United States to make actions without thinking first. Rob replied saying that the threat is very real; they have threatened Americans, they have acted against Americans, and sitting back and doing nothing – letting them have free reign in the Middle East simply is not an option.
