The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) defines terrorism as any act of violence or any dangerous act that that poses a threat to human life that violates federal and state laws. If the said violent acts are designed to try and influence the state government to act in any way through intimidation and/or coercion then that definitely is terrorism. Those performing acts of terror do so hoping to achieve a political, ideological or religious aim This acts of violence may include part or all of kidnapping, assassinations or mass destruction. Terrorism is of two type, that is, domestic terrorism and international terrorism. Domestic terrorism are act of terror that occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of a particular country. …show more content…
As recent as the turn of the millennium acts of terrorism were minimal up until September 11th, 2001when all hell broke loose. Al Qaeda masterminded one of the deadliest attack on American soil by blowing up the World Trade Centre by crashing four planes that they had hijacked into the building. Masterminds of this attack were Khaled Shaykh Muhammad and Osama Bin Laden (Riedel, 2011). From this point on words acts of terror have been on the rise with recent attacks witnessed in Paris 2015 and Brussels 2016.
So as to protect its citizen’s post 9/11, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) undertook several measures to fight this vice. The DHS implemented a four point policy structure that touched on key issues such as:
1. Creation of a Homeland Security Enterprise that functioned to train personnel with the appropriate technical skills to detect and combat terror. It also has a system that detects and reports suspicious activities to the authorities. This enterprise also had funding to the tune of billions of dollars to aid in the fight against terror. This money would be used for training and purchase of specialized

Losing a loved one through acts of terrorism is really painful. The victims suffer for the rest of their lives and as such terrorism need to be eradicated for their sake. Small economies such as Kenya and Colombia are really affected when they are hit with terrorism. Terrorism reduces a country’s GDP and curbs development (Sandler and Enders, 2010). This is because tourists will be discouraged from visiting the country. Externally, foreign relations will be compromised therefore affecting a country’s ability to receive financial aids and
This paper will briefly discuss the formation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). With every government program or agency comes an alphabet soup of acronyms and DHS is no different from the rest. To better understand the agency and concepts that comprise DHS, this paper will also examine acronyms associated with DHS. They are QHSR, HSE, NRF, NIMS, ICS, and UC. Each will get a description while highlighting and discussing core elements or requirements that each acronym calls for or offers.
The Executive Order Establishing Office of Homeland Security Council puts forth an agenda on countering terrorist acts; it is done to prevent untold a...
The FBI defines terrorism as “the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof in furtherance of political or social objectives (fbi.gov).” By this definition, terrorism can be classified as internal or international based on the overall intent of the attack. Terrorism has been around since the beginning of time, but it’s only since 2011 that the world has come to fully understand the meaning of terrorism. The following paragraphs will highlight four different types of terrorist attacks that all took place within the United States spanning over a 40 year time period.
Topic 1: What are the capabilities and limitations of intelligence in supporting homeland security efforts?
America has had 21 terrorist attacks, from 2000 to 2009 consisting mostly of al-Qaeda and suicide bombers (infoplease.com). Osama Ben Laden, leading al-Qaeda’s attacks is fed up with the way America treats the world. Blaming America for global warming and determined to stop them by sending suicide bombers and hijacking planes. After the 9/11 attack America changed the way they looked at security, putting into effect; Airport Security Federalization Act of 2001: To deter and punish terrorist acts in the United States and around the world, to enhance law enforcement investigatory tools (The Library of Congress).
The topic of my paper is types of terrorism. There are several types of terrorism for which to choose for my paper, state, dissident, religious, left-wing v. right-wing, and international. In this paper I have chosen state terrorism, religious terrorism, and international terrorism as the types of terrorism that I am going to discuss. I will discuss what they are in my own words and give examples of two different groups for each type that represent that type of terrorism. Then I will compare and contrast the three types of terrorism that I chose.
Homeland security entities are proactive in the fight against terrorism on American soil. Their mandate is to collect information relating to potential attacks and analyze it to find a solution to the danger. With this in mind, these entities employ numerous spying techniques to collect intelligence for safeguarding of the nation. Homeland security entities have spies in almost all the countries in the world, especially those that show aggression towards America. The main aim of these spies is to carry out espionage to determine threat levels and find ways of neutralizing threats (Randol, 2009). This involves deployment of secret agents to areas or countries that exhibit terrorism activity in a bid to collect information. The spies interact with local people and members of terrorist groups using aliases that enable them conceal their identities.
In Module one, I learned that terrorism is a result of physical harm or deadly acts of force with the intent of a political outcome by the use of terror for coercion. There are various types of terrorism such as international terrorism and domestic terrorism. International terrorism occurs outside of the United States with a purpose to influence the policy of a government by intimidation. International and Domestic terrorism both involve violent acts dangerous to human life that violate federal and state laws. Domestic terrorism occurs within the United States with the intention of coercion or intimidation by way of mass destruction, etc. Some forms of terrorism include Improvised explosive devices (IED), kidnappings, suicide bombings and
There a small but clear differences between domestic terrorism and international terrorism, that difference is where the terrorist act is planned, supported, and carried out. In the case of domestic terrorism, the act must be planned, supported, and carried out all within the boundaries of the United States. The domestic terrorists must also be domicile to the United States and not be current foreign nationals at the time of the act. If the terrorist act is committed with help from a foreign group, planned or supported in a foreign country or committed by foreign nationals inside the boundaries of the U.S., then the attack may be international terrorism. The 9/11 attack was a clear act of international terrorism as it was planned, supported,
Terrorism is the bug of 21 century. Throughout history it has appeared in many various ways: hijacked planes, ships, trains. But never was terrorism committed in such a terrible way as on Tuesday, September 11 in New York City. This tragedy affected us all.
The introduction of the Department of Homeland Security after the terrorist attack of September 11, 2011,
The U.S. Department of State defines terrorism as, “The calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological”. Whereas the Belgium Red Cross says that terrorism is committed “for the purpose of intimidating the population, forcing a third party to act or destablishing or destroying the fundamental structures of a country or of an international organization”.
The word terrorism seems to be easy to define. It is a word that everyone is familiar with. Terrorism, as used in today's media which covers a wide range of violent acts. Terrorism is violent acts that are intended to create fear(terror) are perpetrated for a religious ,political or ideological goal and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non civilians or we can say it is the threat of violence or an act of violence . Terrorism is an international problem in today's global community. Many countries had been affected directly.
What is terrorism, and what constitutes an act of terror? Certainly, the history of terrorism is as old as war itself. Some might say that the strategy of causing fear in the enemy, to make him overestimate your forces while simultaneously doubting his own, make up the very essence of warfare. But mention the word “terrorism” to somebody, and chances are that the first thing that comes to mind is a mental image: The Oklahoma City bombing, dead Marines in Beirut, the Unabomber, or Lockerbie. The events of September 11, which have become synonymous with the idea of terrorism in America, would certainly be at the top of that list. But even these events, which best illustrate the phenomenon for us, fail to define it. This is because of the different circumstances behind each occurrence. The sum cannot simply be broken down into its antecedents. So how do we define a term as broad as terrorism? Before you can destroy your enemy, you must understand your enemy. Keeping this in mind, we’ll look at the many different classifications that terrorism can be separated into, before moving into tactics and mentality.
Terrorism has a tremendous impact on society. It is a rational act of violence and its purpose is to change behavior in a specific society. Terrorism is a political act that is meant to achieve a goal through the act of violence. The nature of terrorism is the nonselective targeting of individuals or a group in society with a goal. The intentions of
