After high school, many parents are excited to send their children to college. They send them to schools like Hampton, Harvard, and Yale to get the best college education possible. With this in mind, a loving father is also aware that his little girl is growing up and going to find love soon; but what he doesn’t expect is that his beautiful, precious daughter might be the next victim of domestic violence on a college campus. Over the last year, reports of domestic violence have dramatically grown on the college campuses of this country. Nearly one-third of college students report being physically assaulted by a partner they have dated in the previous 12 months (cite!!). Domestic violence impacts a women’s mental , physical, and emotional health., It is important to understand the signs and symptoms of domestic violence. The more we understand. the better we can prevent it from happening. [according to who?]Women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of intimate partner violence. With college campus domestic violence, there is more harm done mentally than physically. The broken bones, busted lips, and scratches can be healed but the women’s psyche may not. In addition, domestic violence and other abuse is the most prevalent cause of depression and other mental health difficulties in women. Domestic violence causes women to blame themselves, “ I blamed myself for everything! I thought that it was my fault because I made him so angry. ”A young woman that has been abused has a high chance of having low self esteem problems, high suicide rates, and severe depression. Domestic violence chews away at a woman’s self respect. It slowly strips the confidence as it happens more often. The longer a ... ... middle of paper ... ... I personally have become an advocate for the Stop Against Domestic Violence because I saw how it tore my friend Sabrina to pieces. Domestic violence is never a way for anyone to solve their issue. I told myself that I would help other girls get out of the same situation that my friend was in. I’m an advocate because I believe that love should be painless. The importance of reporting domestic abuse cannot be overstated. You can save your life and maybe that of someone else. Unreported domestic violence goes untreated. By not reporting domestic violence you increase your chance of mental, physical and emotional damage. By not reporting domestic violence the abuser thinks that they have gotten away with a horrible act.
