Dog training has changed in technique throughout the years in addition to the importance of a well-trained dog. Many dog trainers, at least new ones, can be short tempered, which causes them to have issues with their dogs which can lead to abandonment. There are two main techniques in dog training, rewarding good behavior and disciplining bad behavior. There have been many studies suggesting a correlation between the actions of the owners reflect the behaviors of the dog. However, disciplining bad behavior is still a strong technique in the dog trainer community. By rewarding good behavior, it changes the dog, so a better relationship with a dog and its owner is possible.

In an email interview it was stated, “There are some breeds that learn quickly and only want to please, and others that aren’t as easy” which enforces the point of dog trainers knowing the breed to really understand a constructive way in training a dog (Carmack 1). Many behavioral problems of inexperienced dog trainers are those that often never really understand the importance of the breed, of rewarding good behavior, and not reacting harshly to bad behaviors. A study shows that, “The punishment frequency correlated positively with the number of current problematic behaviours” which furthers the negative aspects of disciplining a dog (Hiby et al. 4). This increase in frequency causes the same behaviors to be repeated along with new bad behaviors. Treating a dog like a child is one of the worst or best things that can happen since dogs were built for repetition and structure. Children, unlike dogs, even though the “training” can be the same, can react to things that can change better than dogs can. Dogs need to have order to function, but very constructive and consistent. Many dog trainer problems are the result of not using the correct techniques in making the animal feel safe. For example, dogs can tell the difference between sit and lay down. However, these animals depending on the dog breed have very little ability to distinguish between and rewarding tone of voice and a disappointed voice. The worst thing that a trainer could do is to compare their teaching habits of children to dogs. Dogs do not understand the reasons behind many things; dogs have the main purpose to please their owners and they will do anything to achieve that. Dogs can sometimes guess if they are in trouble, however as soon as a trainer is done with trying to train the dog to do something the dog will go straight back and do the same bad behavior over again. Tone of voice is sensitive to dogs, “Many people use their dog's name any time they want to get the dog's attention; they don't differentiate between praising the dog and scolding it” which can cause problems for the dog later when the trainer wants the dog to do something positive (Palika 2). It is very important to know when the best time to train a dog is, since dogs know the differences in tone it is important be very patient since the dog cannot be entirely blamed if the dog does not understand.
