Does Watching Too Much TV Have a Negative Effect on People?

Like many modern Americans I prefer to spend my free time just relaxing and catching up on my favorite television shows, until the day I wondered to myself, does watching too much television have a negative effect on people? After finding many excellent sources I have learned that watching excess amounts of television has a number of negative effects that I will discuss. Television has been proven to have negative effects on people’s physical health, intelligence and physiologic health. I will also discuss the repercussions of television in productivity and in modern social lives.
Throughout the years television watching has been connected to negative health effects in people, although many of these health assumptions have been false there is still many proven dangers of watching excess television. In a study performed by Stephen P. Yang PhD it is shown that excess amounts of screen time has adverse influence on retinal microvascular structure that can lead to vision complications. Another health concern caused by watching excess amounts of television is the effect of television on exercise, a person’s fitness can be severely damaged by sitting around and viewing television for many hours a day without exercise (Hancox 4.) Shockingly after many tests were conducted by Robert J Hancox, Barry J Milne, and Richie Poultonresults, the results showed that television viewing during childhood and adolescence is associated with obesity, poor cardio respiratory fitness, raised serum cholesterol, and cigarette smoking in early adulthood ( Hancox 4.) In conclusion watching excessive amounts of television can damage tour physical health, social life, and psychological health. Although watching television can have some positive effects like all bad habits it should only be done in moderation. Imagine what you could accomplish with decreased television time, you could be more productive, social, and become healthier. I believe that television viewing should decrease greatly thus leading to improved lives and couture. After reading this essay I hope that you will feel motivated to cut back on your screen time and live your live to the fullest.
