Othello: the moor of Venice
In society today, racism still exists as depicted in the media. In William Shakespeare’s Othello, Othello experienced racism because of his race and his background. Othello is treated differently because Iago thinks he is better then him and deserves a promotion, Brabantio thinks Othello is not good enough for his daughter, and Roderigo has a hatred towards Othello due to him thinking Othello does not deserve Desdemona.
Firstly, Iago thinks Othello does not deserve his position as lieutenant. He has a hatred towards him because Othello did not promote him: “In personal suit to make me his lieutenant/ off-capp’d to him; and, by the faith of man/ I know my price; I am worth no worse a place” (Shakespeare, 1.1: 9-11). Iago thinks that he is worth more than Othello and deserves his position because he has better skills. He thinks Othello does not deserve to have the high position he has due to his skin colour. He thinks he deserves Desdemona and loves her so much that he would kill himself if he did not end up with her: “It is silliness to live when to live is torment…” (1.3: 308). Roderigo thinks life without Desdemona is a burden and Othello should not be the one to end up with her. Roderigo feels that Othello is only using Desdemona for her money when he states, “What a full fortune does the thick-lips owe/ if he can carry’t thus” (1.1: 66-67). Not only does Roderigo think Othello is using Desdemona for money, he also makes a racist comment towards Othello’s appearance as a result of Othello looking different than everyone else. While Roderigo does not know anything about Othello, he jumps to conclusions about his personality as a result of his race.
