As we progress with the latest technologies that have improved communication beyond all bounds over the last twenty years, there is a side effect that is becoming more and more problematic to our society in 2010 - the issue of human isolation. As more and more adults take jobs that allow them to work from home and more and more youngsters grow up in a world where all social interactions outside of school take place via the Internet with them sat at home in front of a computer.
I am going to look at how I believe that this so called 'communication revolution' has lead to isolation of individuals from today's society. Human beings are social animals and this solitary lifestyle can lead to undesirable effects such as loneliness or an inability to establish relationships, possibly even resulting in clinical depression[key-1].
If we look at two case studies that are typical of how a world with such superb communication technologies such as email and instant messaging, is affecting the lifestyles of the people in the UK today, we see the cracks in day-to-day situations where maybe being set free from the commuter rat race has had some radical consequences for that extremely social animal - the human being.
This revolution in communication technology has had a huge impact on today's workplace. As we can see in the first case study, companies investments in IT have negated the need for staff to be on site, by allowing them to work from home and communicate with colleagues via phone, email, or instant message and share any documents via ftp or sent as an email attachment. This has many benefits for the employee including not having to deal with the with commuting to work everyday saving not only time and money, but also the stress...

...ology to become isolated from society either.
To summarize, the breakthroughs in technology of the last 20 years have completely changed the way our society operates in a way that could be harmful to the populous. I don't think that a complete ban on these technologies would be a good idea, I do however think that people should be informed of the dangers of isolation, and children should be taught from a young age the importance of social interaction and the importance of being an active member of a community. I think in the next few years when this technology has been around longer, and people have grown up with it and has it become a larger part of our society, as I believe it will unless actions are taken to prevent this, it will be interesting to see if our modern day social structures adapt to allow this technology to be at the forefront of our everyday life.
In the world today, people are constantly surrounded by technology. At any given moment, we can connect to others around the world through our phones, computers, tablets, and even our watches. With so many connections to the outside world, one would think we have gained more insight into having better relationships with the people that matter the most. Despite these connections, people are more distant to one another than ever. In the article, “Stop Googling. Let’s Talk," author Sherry Turkle details her findings on how people have stopped having real conversations and argues the loss of empathy and solitude are due to today’s technology. Turkle details compelling discoveries on how technology has changed relationships in “Stop Googling. Let’s Talk,” and her credibility is apparent through years of research and the persuasive evidence that supports her claims.
With the entry of technology, humankind built up the capacity to communicate around the world. However, there were many debates whether technology changed the way of socializing with people. Despite the fact that technology has its positive sides, it ought to be found in a negative light. As technology made people's lives easier, they lost their social skills. The problem is that Nowadays' generation is failing to understand the epidemic of communicating via internet and its side effects.
In the essay "Our future selves," by Eric Schmitz and Jared Cohen, the authors focus solely on how technology has had an optimistic impact on our lives and society. Similarly, the more technology advances are available the more effectivities, productive, and creative an individual will become. Therefore, making an individual feel more connected and equal. However, in his essay "The Loneliness of the Interconnected," Charles Seife introduces and proposes an opposing view. Seife believes that the more technology offers us the more isolated we become towards our surrounding. Due to the abusive use of technology we have become isolated to reality, to opposing views but most of all towards verbal communication. Thus, although theses two essays demonstrate
Humanity has many barriers that separate us, such as location, language, and culture, but through technology we are able to connect with others. We are able to have our voices heard all over the world and make connections. Our voices are powerful tools used to connect with others and once it is taken away, it isolates us. Not communicating with others, being
Turkle provides dialogues of individuals who avoid social interactions at all cost and would rather communicate through technology, as it is just an inconvenience to have direct confrontations. These dialogues strongly support Turkle’s argument that we’re creating a greater gap between others and ourselves. The reason we are lonely is because we place less effort into building relations with others.
Whether technology is with us or hurting us, we still have to use it and it affects our lives daily. We need it to get a hold of someone. We need it to do our jobs. Most importantly, we need it to keep our lives away from harm. There are many ways to manipulate technology, but technology has more good to it than bad. There are those who use it for good, like investigators so they can figure out the real story. Then there are those who use it for bad, just like those who commit cyber bullying along with other minor and major things. We need technology regardless if people argue they like or not. There is no way to stop technology and keeping people from making it better. With the developments in technology, we may be able to enjoy all the pricey luxuries and still enjoy life at the same time.

Telecommuting may be the movement of the future, which will allow more people to work away from the office. Many people see telecommuting as a way to be close to home or allow them to be connected to their organization while working abroad. While telecommuting might work for some people, telecommuting is not for everyone. There are many disadvantages; as well advantages to telecommuting which most people do not take into account. When considering telecommuting, the advantages fall for both employer and employee. The same can be said about the disadvantages of telecommuting.
How much can technology impact your social life? Who would of thought that technology would affect life in such a major way? Little did people know that technology can impact the way humans interact with each other. While listening to music and playing games on their mobile devices, how many people actually get to know one another while standing right next to each other? A small ride on a metro or bus ride will show you just how little interaction goes on in a humans life do to the amount of use on their mobile devices. The role technology plays in socializing has a great impact on people’s interaction. People can be standing right next to each other with out saying one word to one another. While waiting for the next class to start or even during the class, people tune out the rest of the world and this can lead up to social isolation. Technology has had a bad impact on the way humans socialize because it causes people to be less interactive. Social isolation is a health condition that can become very severe and lead up to depression, anxiety, despair and many other things. Social isolation can be avoided if technology is limited to use at only appropriate times as when bored, alone or incase of an emergency you would use cell phones.
The truth is that the world is changing and technology has just created a new platform where people do not have to meet physically often to have a conversation. How then does technology make people lonely when we can talk through the phone, computers, and tablets almost daily? In our daily use of technological gadgets, we also meet new people who make our lives more interesting as we learn new things, crack jokes and watch funny videos which make the day lively. Sometimes, life is boring and technology makes people happier because it connects us to people and events across the globe. Similarly, we participate in such talks, video games, and live-streams that make us engaged. At times, we observe things over the internet and share them with members our family and in the process we all laugh. Therefore, how does technology make us isolated or lonely? Despite the argument that technology makes us either more alone or happy, the truth is that technology is here to stay. Technology advances each and every single day while more people are joining the online community. In conclusion, technology and technological devices such as cell phones, telephones, the internet, and computers influence each part of our everyday lives and have made it more convenient, enjoyable, and yet lonely at
“We barely have time to pause and reflect these days on how far communicating through technology has progressed. Without even taking a deep breath, we’ve transitioned from email to chat to blogs to social networks and more recently to twitter” (Alan 2007). Communicating with technology has changed in many different ways. We usually “get in touch” with people through technology rather than speaking with them face to face. The most popular way people discuss things, with another individual, is through our phones. Phones have been around way before I was born in 1996, but throughout the years, they have developed a phone called a “smart phone”. The smart phone has all kinds of new things that we can use to socialize with our peers. On these new phones, we can connect with our friends or family on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Technology has also developed Skype, a place you can talk with people on the computer with instant voice and video for hours. The new communication changes have changed drastically from the new advances made in technology through our smart phones, social networking sites, and Skype.
Technology is causing isolation because people are constantly communicating with others on their smartphone. Although technology helps people stay in touch it is also making them further apart in the real world.
The rapid development of information systems and technology brings some positive effects to individuals. In order to use information systems effectively, individuals need to acquire skills and knowledge on using different computer technology. Take an example of an individual working in a project on market research, he needs to learn the way to use spreadsheets for analysing the data. The new knowledge acquired by the individuals will lead to upskilling effect. The innovation of technology brings a lot more new channels of communication, such as e-mail and instant messaging applications, it increases interaction between individuals. The barriers of location is eliminated by technology, people can communicate with one another in anywhere around the world through Internet. In addition, virtual office and work from home are becoming a common practice for companies, people can enjoy more flexibility in working locations and hours, and this is particularly beneficial to individuals who have young children at h...
Advances in technology have changed businesses dramatically, in particular the communication and information technology that are conducted in firms, which changed the appearance and pace of businesses over the past few decades. ICT in particular, has evolved a lot over the past 30 years; important information can be stored in computers rather than being in drawers enabling information to be transferred at a greater volume and speed (Guy, 2009). ICT has also expanded various forms of telecommunications and workload conducted in businesses, internet examples of this include: e-mails can be used to communicate with others...
Consider a situation where a family is sitting at the dining table, the son pull out his iPhone, connects to Wi-Fi, and starts chatting with his friends on “Facebook”. The father has a Samsung Galaxy S4 in his hands and he is reading the newspaper online and using “Whatsapp” messenger while having his meal. The mother is busy texting her friends. They are all “socializing” but none of them has spoken as much as a single word to each other. This situation can be commonly seen nowadays. Technology has brought us closer and squeezed the distances but in reality, it has taken us away from each other. The rapid growth of technology has brought about significant changes in human lives, especially in their relationships. The latest technologies have turned this world into a “global village” but the way humans interact with each other, the types of relations and their importance has changed a lot. The advancement in technology has brought us close but has also taken us apart.
