Blacks in the North were partially free. Document C is a speech made by a young African American. This speech is about a young man who was first in his class, he was aying he could’ve been anything: the only thing stopping him is discrimination. He was scared, that he wouldn’t get a good job because of the way he looked. The note in Doc C says, “ Before the Civil War most Northern schools for blacks were segregated. However, this was an improvement over the South where public schooling for both white and free blacks was very limited, and where educating slaves were generally illegal.” This young man was able to go to school, and he can get a good job.
