It's a surprising fact that 90 percent of young boys and 40 percent of young girls play video games on a regular basis. The real question is how many of those young people play violent video games, and of those, how many have become more violent as a result? Although some people don't believe that violent video games are harmful to young boys and girls, they are harmful because they cause more aggressive behavior and they desensitize. Some people believe that violent video games aren't harmful to young boys and girls. In a recent study, "Researchers find that people serving time for violent crimes typically consume less media than the average person in the general population"(Jenkins).
Fast paced video games are correlated with positive development. This is a research paper (obviously) of why video games don't cause violence among teens. Even though video games can be very violent and sexual, they have shown to not cause juvenile delinquency because people who play video games tend to be more relaxed and think logically, many studies have proven this. Also over protecting teens can have a negative effect. Video games could cause troubled teens to outrage but most teens are normal and some troubled teens don't have violent tendencies.
With the magnitude of popularity that violent video games are facing these days, it is no wonder that they have come under great scrutiny by many social scientists and parents alike. The question that many studies are facing is whether or not video games have an adverse effect on the youth of our nation. This is because no research has been conducted that shows a correlation between a child acting out real world violence due to a violent video game. Studies of the negative effects of video games on our youth are not the only studies that have been analyzed in the course of putting this research together. Research on the positive ways in which violent video games can be used in the development of the youth of the nation has also been analyzed in the process of putting the research shown in this paper together as well.
Researchers, like Gentile and Anderson, have displayed that violent games may increase aggression for a short time on the people playing them, but the aggression isn’t strong enough to create long-term effect. When a kid sees in a video game that he can beat someone else up and get away with it they think they can do that in real life. This will increase bullying and kids are being taught not to bully. This is an official statement made by a Supreme Court justice, reporting on the finding of United States government. While some continue to link violence with video games the issue is solely based upon their opinion, and the government has done extensive tests to come to their standing on the issue.
Video game addiction is not a myth like some people think it is, it’s real. Ninth grade boys averaged two-hundred and seven minutes of video game playing each day (Vitelli). Many of our teens and pre-teens in America and across the globe are at risk for video game addiction. Although video game addiction is impossible to avoid, there are ways to help prevent video game addiction. Because of this video game pandemic, parents need to be more educated on why teens become addicted, how they become addicted, what makes video games so addicting, and how to prevent addiction from happening.
