Artist use their “pieces” to express their ideas and feelings. Although some may not agree with how artist choose to express themselves; their right should not be taken away. When people disagree their freedom of speech is not taken away, so why should an artist right be taken away. At times art pieces can evoke emotions better than speech can. If every artist listened to what critics said, there would never be any “great” art pieces. “Great” art pieces are the ones that make a person stop and think about what the artist is trying to portray. Artist should not be responsible for how others perceive their art.
Some of the most controversial art forms are paintings and sculptures. Pablo Picasso’s painting, Guernica, received a great deal of controversy when it was created. Picasso’s painting depicts the bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. Many people during that time thought it was distasteful. Picasso wasn’t trying to please people with his painting. He was trying to make a point of how demoralizing war can be, and how Spain would remain strong. This past summer, during Art Prize, Patrick McKearnan submitted four nude sculptures. When the pieces were “installed” there was an instant uproar. Some people thought that the sculptures should be taken out of the contest; others admired how life like they were. But would there have been as much resistance to the sculptures if they looked like Michelangelo’s sculpture of David? Although many had their oppositions about McKearnan’s sculptures, the pieces remained in the contest and people flocked to see the sculptures for themselves. Despite peoples’ issues with these art pieces, they still did what they were meant to do. They evoked emotion.

People should have more of an open mind when it comes to art. They should remember that artist create art pieces for multiple reasons. Some create pieces to shock their viewers. Others create pieces to make a point or to stand up for a cause. Paintings and sculptures are probably the most common art form, but that is not the only form of expression. Music can be used to express emotions as well. Literature has been a form of expression throughout history for multiple reasons. All of these forms of expression have remained popular for one main reason. They are relatable. Paintings and sculptures are relatable because they can visually show people their emotions. Music and literature are relatable because they can say things in a way that some people never could. Despite peoples issues with any art form they will prevail, as long as they are relatable.
A lot of people might be doubtful that art has much power to make the world a better place. If you asked they would probably summarize art as scribbles or
What is art and how is it used as a tool for communication? These multifaceted questions are answered by analyzing ancient and modern art. In the article “When Art Loses Its Sting: The evolution of Protest Art in Authoritarian Contexts” Jacqueline Adams explains how art captures the interest of sociologists. Art executes a unique duality in society. In both recent and ancient history, art has been used as propaganda. Now, contemporary art works to challenge or protest ideologies. Analyzing art provides an interesting insight: the art of today holds as much influence as it did in history. Art has not “lost its sting,” but rather gained a phenomenal impact.
People can have many different opinions depending on a topic, but what is truly difficult is getting a complete level of understanding from every opinion, or understanding the point of view of each opinion. Even accepting the points of view can be difficult for some people, who believe that their opinions are right. Luckily, people can learn about the other person’s frame of reference, and at the very least understand the topic or the person a little better. This particular topic is art, which is known for its multiple possible perceptions or its many different messages that it can send a person or group of people. In this way, people can learn more about the thought processes and feelings of others. Unfortunately, with differing opinions,
I am an artist. That is not a disclaimer or a boast; it is a statement of position. I believe in the undeniable importance of art and the futility of censorship. I also believe that art is one of the best indicators of the mood of a culture. Scholars, doctors, therapists, and lawyers can attempt to explain us to ourselves, but their testimony, while useful, will almost always be dry and lacking in emotional depth. I am proud to write in defense of a group that predates and outlasts all other professional analysts of the human condition-creators of art.
Whether it is music, TV, movies, or video games; in the end it is all art, and art should not be
Art is a language of its own and with out he proper understanding, people are like expression goes “left on the outside looking in”. In other words, people without the proper understanding of art, technique and form as well as other elements can’t appreciate a work of art as much as when you understand why an artist painted in the way they did and what they are trying to get across to his audience. Despite artists attempts to try and make their works as viewer friendly as possible, without the understanding and knowledge gained from an art class as this one people will never fully understand the a work of art as it is meant to be.
It is art fulfilling its role in society. It is art that brings the moral issues. It is art that makes us human.
When you think about America, the first thing that comes to mind is liberty. Liberty of the government and its citizens is one thing that colonists exceedingly desired during the British oppressive regime. When United States gained independence, the Founding Fathers drafted the Constitution of the Unites States, a document that has been governing our country for more than 200 years. The constitution was drafted accordingly to ensure that people’s opinions were heard. What our Founding Fathers could not foresee is that in our 21st century, The Freedom of Speech not only gives a person such a massive power, but also an opinion even if it is immoral and goes against citizens’ values.
Freedom, equality, independence, and righteousness are common terms associated with the beautiful country of America. Many immigrants and foreigners have embarked on the journey to reach the beautiful valleys and gardens of a country built on values such as unity and individualism. The statue of Liberty, alone, is the universal symbol for freedom which stands in the heart of New York City greeting thousands of immigrants each year; embodying hope and opportunity for those seeking a better life in America. It stirs the desire for freedom in people all over the world; Muslims in Burma who fall under the threat of extortion, women in Egypt who are not given a voice, or people in South Africa who struggle to live because of ensuing rivalry battles. The United States is a safe haven on its own to millions across the world who are subjected to tyranny or despotism. If America is a place for opportunity and freedom to practice our own rights, then why should our institutions ban such an important emblem like freedom of speech? A quality so inherently important that molds the thoughts and personalities of our own students; the future of America. If our students are subjected to live in fear like the rest of the world, then how is America distinct from the oppressors and wrongdoers? How will our nation's colleges and universities fuel the curiosities of future healers and entrepreneurs without letting them question the status quo and think freely?
One of the most unique figures in the continuum of the art world, Marcel Duchamp changed the way we look at and produce art today. Marcel Duchamp was by far, one of the most controversial figures in art. Two of the most well known and talked about pieces by him are The Fountain and The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even . Duchamp created many other pieces that caught the attention of critics, other artists, and the population in a negative way; however, these two pieces alone, brought about the greatest amount of controversy.
For over two thousand years, various philosophers have questioned the influence of art in our society. They have used abstract reasoning, human emotions, and logic to go beyond this world in the search for answers about arts' existence. For philosophers, art was not viewed for its own beauty, but rather for the question of how art and artists can help make our society more stable for the next generation. Plato, a Greek philosopher who lived during 420-348 B.C. in Athens, and Aristotle, Plato’s student who argued against his beliefs, have no exceptions to the steps they had to take in order to understand the purpose of art and artists. Though these two philosophers made marvelous discoveries about the existence of art, artists, and aesthetic experience, Plato has made his works more controversial than Aristotle.
Art has been around for centuries, and yet there are still questions that remain about the true meaning of the object. Who truly gets that last say so about what the artist was trying to depict out of the picture, is it the audience or the artist himself? While conducting research online there has been numerous controversial pictures and paintings that came up for various reasons, merely the main three topics were about sex, religion, and politics. Of course, there has been discrepancies on religious pictures, as there are several religions, simply put the one painting with multiple variations to my surprise, the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci. While in grade school, there are numerous schools that focus on this picture as a simple art project, therefore, reading the different opinion of people and the history behind it, is a world that no person could be prepared to walk through.
Feminism has been an extremely controversial and significant subject over the centuries. The issue of equality between men and women have been questioned and exceedingly debated upon, why men were treated and considered the ‘superior’ gender. During the 1960’s, civil rights, protests against war and gay and lesbian movements were at its peak. It was the period of time, which the Feminist art movement had emerged, also known as the “second-wave” of feminism, shifting away from modernism. Women wanted to gain equal rights as men within the art world. Feminist artists such as Cindy Sherman, Carolee Schneemann and Hannah Wilke pursued to change the world and perspectives on women through their artworks, specifically in body art. Their goal was to “influence cultural attitudes and transform stereotypes.” (DiTolla. T, 2013)
Artist way of thought is different than the average designer. Artists usually try to develop a work of art with the intention of bringing an emotion viewpoint, instinctive feeling, and or state of mind. If someone has visible talent in the art field, it usually comes down to a natural born ability. When dealing with artist you have to understand their mentality. The artist mentality comes down to the artistic skills and abilities that the artist is born with. Everything the artist creates flows out naturally from their abilities they were born with and not just their abilities that they were trained...
Ethical judgements in that case acted as a limitation for artist work, but in that case I think that groundlessly, while the artist aim was to show a problem neglected by people, and about the historical issue which remains silent on the lessons of history quite stunning sculpture, perhaps with a heavy message may seem unethical to some people but in my opinion, accurately reflects the historical events that should not be forgotten. We develop our views using different ways of knowing, sense perception, reasoning and emotions that help us to determine whether something is moral or not, right or wrong. It of course differs among people, while we all perceive the world in various ways. Ethical judgements limit the methods available in the production of knowledge in both the arts and the natural sciences. But these judgements are definitely needed to keep some safety while exploring the world.
