Definition wise divorce is the formal breaking of a bond between two people who were legally married. It is caused by a number of reasons like lack of trust and loss of love and bond between the two. This would mean that the marriage is officially over. Divorce affects the lives of many people outside of the divorcing family including many aspects of society. It affects the family, a micro sociological group, immediately and sometimes drastically. Infact it affects the entire country, a macro sociological group, as generally marriage builds wealth whereas divorce depletes it. As married couples try to earn more due to having to think about children`s education and welfare. It can be argued that divorce is only a personal problem. Take, for example, a young married woman with children. It would impact her economic status and economic future as the man usually walks out with the most valuable asset, earning ability, whereas the woman walks out with the biggest cash drain i.e. the kids and the house. For a young woman going through a divorce negatively affects her ability to provide basic housing and nourishment needed to be a productive citizen. According to statistics, 50 per cent of new marriages in the modern world end within the first year. The rate of divorce in Kenya is on the rise as well and if the reports are anything to go by there is a divorce case in court every day. However, due to the high legal costs most couples opt to settle the issues out of court. Married couples are now divorcing faster in Kenya than new couples are getting married and this is caused by the same existing problems like unrealistic expectations, conflict and abuse, infidelity and communication problems.
