Diversity is one thing, I have come to accept and appreciate greatly in my life. I am 22 years old and was born in Ghana, West Africa. To me, I see myself as an African woman. Reasoning being that both my parents are Africans but from different tribes. I feel that placing the responsibility for diversity initiatives within the Human Resources department will limit the overall effectiveness of the initiatives for the simple reason that Human Resources is only a small part of the total organization. Diversity in my eyes means many different cultures, people, religion, talents, race, appearance, and moral values. Diversity is what makes people unique from others. There are over 7 Billion people in the world. Each Person is different; they have something different from everyone. In this world you can find things that you can never imagine exist. Also Crazy things people can do that you think it’s not possible. All around the world there are exotic, unimaginable, scary, intriguing things and people we will soon come to meet.
Diversity is a notion, when applied to the majority of circumstances, can create a positive conclusion. The trick to producing a positive outcome is often how the different aspects are brought together. Consider a classic dinner combination peas and carrots, the two colors look appealing and the two flavors comes together as one making a superb side dish. Now consider oil and water, these two substance are not often considered a good combination. Although, this is not always the case; olive oil and vinegar (which is water based) when mixed, come together into a delectable salad dressing. Diversity and inclusion should also apply to humans by bringing people together who are different it can creates a whole that is enhanced by the uniqueness of each individual.
When America was founded, it was established on freedom and equality for all people, at first religious freedom, but eventually freedom of speech, press, petition, and more. In time, America began to be known as a “melting pot” of cultures as more and more people came because they wanted this freedom; the more people who came though, the more problems America had. There were too many cultural discrepancies between people, and ultimately America, the country based on freedom and equality, faced challenges concerning diversity.
Changing a work place culture and maintain diversity in our organization would be the most critical in keeping the momentum of the culture. Advantages of a diverse environment outweigh the disadvantages, from lawsuits to establishing a competitive edge in the market. Working in an environment that has a “good–old-boy” culture may have been the in-thing in the 50’s. However, diversity in the work place today drives competitiveness by blending ideas from mingling genders, creeds, race, and age, to the global market of the 21st century. The shift from a manufacturing to a service economy, the globalization of markets, new business scheme with more teamwork, work together with different corporate cultures of mergers and alliances and changing labor market are the five reasons why diversity has become a dominant activity in managing an organizations human resources.
