Diversity is increasingly seen throughout the world and specifically in Canada. I intend to focus on what diversity, assumption and ethnocentrism are and how, in the nursing profession, it is important to be aware of these and how they all have potential to hinder nursing care. I will also focus on how we may need to find ways to accommodate diversities, understand ways that assumption may hinder our nursing care and how some ethnocentric values may negatively influence our nursing care. Assumptions can derive from something we had previously learnt and don’t question. Assumptions may stem from a system of our beliefs such as we may assume our own beliefs to be true and then use them to interpret the world around us. (“Distinguishing Between Inferences and Assumptions”, 2013) Ways that assumption may hinder nursing care are assuming similarity. People tend to make the mistake of assuming that other people value the same things as we do which can lead to maintaining a self-focused perspective instead of asking questions or looking at it from the other-oriented perspective. Instead of making any assumptions, seeking information by asking the client questions would be more useful to get an actual answer than to make assumptions based on what you see or hear. Another ethnocentric value that could influence nursing care would be having or voicing negative thoughts on the amount of family that comes at one time or many times throughout the day to visit patients of different cultures while in the hospital. In some cultures, during a time of sickness, family is very important and we may need to put our values aside and be understanding of this even if, to us, this may be seen as negative or unnecessary. Our own ethnocentric values may prevent us from understanding different cultural differences and when we don’t take some of the values of our clients that are different than ours into some consideration, this can have a negative impact on the care we
