Diversity and Discrimination Regulations
The first step in solving a problem is recognizing that there is one. A quote from HBO’s The Newsroom series couldn’t be truer regarding the situation at hand, Discrimination in the workplace. The further you go back in history; the more and more you see discrimination in the workplace. If you were a white male, you had it made. Everyone else was out to fend for themselves but today that’s no the case, at least we hope so. Discrimination in the workplace is a terrible thing, something that shouldn’t even be considered as a problem in this day in age, but unfortunately it is. Thankfully though, there are companies and laws that protect the rights of humans and give everyone a fair chance and do what they want most, live the American dream.
Publicly traded companies such as Cisco, EBay, and Adidas, are just three examples of companies that engage in ethical business practices and realize the value and importance of diversity in the workplace. Without companies like this setting examples for others alike, there would be a bigger problem on our hands. Things like higher unemployment, poverty, and other disastrous outcomes would just be the beginning. Now obviously, those are all problems we face in today’s world but just imagine them if they were on a grander scale due to the lack of diversity in the workplace. Fortunately, there are regulations that promote diversity and rid of discrimination and these companies do business the right way.

As the workforce continues to exemplify a broader base of minority groups, the dominant population begins to lessen and questions emerge. Based on the idea of inclusion, white men do fit into a diversity requirement because they themselves are a group that is included in the diverseness of a company. Taking the stats from above, 48.45 percent of employees in private industry were women, while 34.1 percent belonged to race/ethnic minority. With those being minorities themselves and adding the percentages together, that’s a combined 82.55 percent. That leaves 17.45 percent for white men, in turn, making them a minority, which is the entire reason for a diverse workplace.

Many face discriminations because of their race and gender. Some may not be aware of it, but it might be present when applying for a job and in their wages. People of color are more likely to either be unemployed, getting paid less, or being in a position that requires fewer skills. Many studies have proved that race can determine if an applicant will get the job or not. White males are more likely to get hired because they possess two advantages: being white and being a male. What triumphs these two traits is technology. Many big corporations have gotten rid of their human employees to replace them with machines that could do their jobs better while saving the employer more money. It 's approximated that by 2025, one-fourth of the jobs will be replaced by technology because digital utilization will be used more and more often. Employees have to deal with unfair treatment in their workplace. Not only that, but some face other difficulties outside of their jobs. Money, food, shelter, and health are at risk when having to handle their managers and obeying their rules. Sometimes managers interfere with their employee 's productivity by making them do "busy work" or undertake pointless tasks, making the employees ' working experience miserable or even the customers because some of them might be rude. In my opinion, it is important for private and public organizations to adopt and implement programs and laws to overcome the challenges in a diverse work environment. One of the laws that organizations follow are Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972. Equal Employment Act of 1972 prohibits discrimination of employment on the basis of race, color, nation, origin, sex, religion, age, disability, political , beliefs , and marital status. Cisco also offers an extensive range of hardware products used to form information networks, or to give them access to these networks. Cisco also has it’s own software called IOS software, which provides network services and enables networked applications. Cisco serves customers in a wide range of businesses, such as corporations, government agencies, utilities, and educational institutes, and small to medium size businesses. Cisco sells it’s products worldwide. They serve as many as 115 different countries. They have more than 225 sales and support offices in 75 countries. Cisco strongly believes in the advantages of a global networked business. By using networked applications over the internet and it’s own internal network, Cisco is gaining financial contribution of at least $825 million a year in operating costs savings and revenue enhancements. Today, Cisco is the largest commerce site, with 87% of their orders are transacted over the web.
In today’s workplace, African Americans continue to be subjected to overt discrimination. This can take the form of ethnic jokes, racial slurs and exclusionary behaviors by Euro-American co-workers and managers. Even more disturbing is the verbal abuse, calculated mistreatment and even physical threats experienced by some African Americans while on the job. African Americans have also faced overt acts such as being reassigned to lower level projects, not receiving a promotion even though they were equally qualified and receiving less wages than other employees, even less qualified new hires. The discrimination can be so pervasive that African Americans feel uneasy and threatened, demotivated and disrespected, eventually feeling forced to leave to search for other employment.
The NPR clip explains that there are so many untapped markets still out there in the world which organizations are not a part of due to their diversity resistance. If organizations learn to become more excepting to diversity verses being forced to comply, they would be able to tap into untapped markets. The main issue that I have always had with government legislation or company policies on diversity standards is that it feels too forced. From the text it seems that that most organizations are not accepting or open to diversity, however more concerned with their image, ultimately focused on fulfilling their diversity quotas. The overall issues with diversity and culture lies within us. We have created this problem in our organizations. As someone that is from a Caucasian background, I can’t believe still in 2016 African Americans feel like they need to white wash their names and resumes just so they can have the same opportunities. Organizations need to stop trying to force creating the culture but allow the diversity of the organization to shape their culture. We are always concerned with our individualism so why are we not allowing our individual diversity and culture to reshape our

When an organization increases their diversity, they are able to enhance positive effects within their job. Unfortunately, discrimination still exists in hiring, firing and promotions; and the diversity of the workforce regrettably can cause hostility in the workplace when individuals do not appreciate and respect the differences among themselves and their co-workers.
America has always struggled with discrimination and prejudice throughout its history. On July 2nd, 1964 the United States took a step in the right direction, when it recognized the principle that all men are created equal with the passage of the Civil Rights Act. The Act outlawed all discrimination formed on the basis of race, religious affiliation, gender or ethnic origin. In addition, it ended racial segregation in educational institutions and in the workplace. However, it can be argued that discrimination and prejudice remain today. America has attempted to stop this by instituting anti-discrimination laws, however the laws can only do so much.
Discrimination at work is a touchy issue. Most people, if not all, have experienced some sort or form of it and they ignored it, quit, or got fired from their job. Women tend to be more emotional than men and when women are judged and discriminated they are offended by it immediately. Also, the fact of women getting a lower income than men for the same job is almost unbelievable. It is very important to be concerned on the issue because it is constantly increasing throughout the United States. It upsets me that women are paid less than men because women have the same ability and work ethic as men do, but they are looked at differently. According to AAUW, women are making 77 percent of what men make. This rate hasn’t changed since 2002 (Hill, 2013). Statistics show that women will never make as much as men due to the thought of never being comparable to men (Williams, 2013).
Discrimination is not just a growing problem in the United States rather it is a global problem. However, throughout the years, there have been many laws that have been passed to give everyone their “separate but equal” rights—originally granted by the constitution of the United States. Examples of this include the Brown v. Board of Education case, the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (to list a few). Brown v. Board of Education was a landmark case that ended legal segregation in school systems. The success of this case was due largely in part to the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. This ruling not only paved the way for the integration of different race but also a victory for the Civil Rights Movement. On the other hand, the Equal Pay Act of 1963 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was a key piece of the civil rights legislation in the sense that it, “established the legal standard barring employers from excluding anyone from employment on the basis of race or ethnicity” (Sweet and Meiksins 184). Another example would be affirmative action. Affirmative action is a policy favoring those who have suffered from discrimination.
