“Divergent” Summary

In a Dystopian society based on the future in Chicago, survivors of a post-apocalyptic city choose a faction which they are obligated to abide in order to avoid the streets and stay with a group. There are 5 factions which believe a certain virtue is best. The factions include Dauntless, Erudite, Abnegation, Amity, and Candor. To determine your faction, someone takes you through an aptitude test. A despised group called Divergent is disapproved in this society for several reasons. Divergent don't fit into any other factions because they are different; In addition, they are immune to physical and mental control which is a problem for the totalitarian government; therefore, divergent are executed if exposed. Beatrice Prior, the main character, is separated from her family after her aptitude test. She was tested divergent; however, the supervisor was shocked and decided to conceal the secret. She then advises Beatrice to join Dauntless which are dedicated to fearlessness, toughness, and courage. She changes her name to Tris because she feels it will let her become a different person. Tris quickly makes some friends as well as enemies and meets the enigmatic recruit trainer, Four. He trains the initiates by testing their bravery with many difficult and dangerous tasks. He warns Tris that Erudite is plotting a war against Abnegation using Dauntless to fight them. Initiation day arrives and Tris is ordered to face her fears that she must overcome. Later, the Dauntless leaders inject a “peaceful” serum saying it was a tracking device. The same night, everyone in the Dauntless compound gets up, while mind-controlled, except for Tris and Tobias (because they’re Divergent).
