As Divergent takes you into a breathtaking adventure you don't want to pause or even take a break to do something else. The city that the book is located in is dark, peculiar, and outside the ordinary. As the different buildings and people are surrounded by walls giving them limited access to the outside there are different factions which are like groups. The factions have different political opinions, opinions, ways of life, and life styles. There are five factions Amity, Candor, Erudite, Abnegation, and Dauntless each having a significance. Besides those five there are the factionless who are like the homeless, the ones who fail at trying, who don't succeed. When you are born you are automatically placed in the faction whom your parents are in and at the age of 16 take a test which will determine what faction you could be in.
Beatrice Prior, the main character of Divergent, is lost in who she wants to be in life. She has a normal family, normal life, and normal routine for the Abnegation people. The Abnegation care about others, they are people who consider in being peaceful and to do selfless actions without complaining. As Beatrice goes through years of school, and learning how to be a proper Abnegation it comes the time for the aptitude test. The aptitude is not like any test known to us. It is a simulation but not any simulation it is one that puts you in a place and a situation with a serum that is injected into your neck. They decide to go to the Erudite since they are the ones who make Serum but then are caught and are sent to the main leader. The main leader tells them that the Dauntless are working for them to invade the abnegation and kill them to find something.
As the Dauntless continue and are killing people Tris and Four are stuck in a room at the erudite compound with the leader. She figures out that they are Divergent, injects Four with a serum that will work with divergent and send him to a rom to control the dauntless since they now have turned him bad. Tris gets put in a room and almost dies but her mom comes and saves her. Now it is up to Tris to try to save Four, Her Family, Citizens lives, and end the Simulation. Can she do it, will she succeed?
Tris changes from being unsure and weak to a strong, brave, and determined in the book, Divergent. In the beginning of the story, Tris thinks she is not selfless enough to be in Abnegation. She is even more confused as her aptitude test determines she is divergent, a person who has more than one personality type who is suited for more than one faction. As she transfers to Dauntless, Tris realizes that she is at a disadvantage in Stage One, which involved physical activity. She is short and scrawny, and she doesn’t excel in an of the exercises alongside losing the fights. This threatens her chance of passing initiation. Then they heard the shafts coming up. Everybody was wondering why it was coming up because it wasn’t supposed to come up for another month. When it opened one of the guy’s newt said, “It’s a girl.” She then woke up and said, “Thomas!” Everyone then glared at Thomas. They took her to the hut to put her somewhere. Gally one of the other guys said, “When you showed up everything started to change” Thomas replied, “I don’t know why.” Thomas then decided to show Gally the unknown object he had found in the griever. Gally then said, “What is that thing?” Thomas told him, “I don’t know I found it when I killed the griever.” Gally surprisingly said, “You killed a griever?” Tomas told him, “Yah but I didn’t know I could even do it in the first place, but if I wanted to live I had to.” Chuck then came running up to the to them and said, “The girl woke up and she wasn’t too fond of where she was and she has a knife as well so you better hurry up.” So Thomas and Gally got there the girl was yelling, “Get back now!” But when Thomas got there he said, “It is alright just put the knife down. Roth will have you questioning your personal social role on society after you read her novel. The novel follows the point of view of the protagonist, tris Prior, who must decide on faction to join and pledge allegiance too for the rest of her life. There are five factions total. Eric is the epitome of bravery, the very home which it lives. Though cold heartedly evil he displays more bravery than any other character in the book Divergent by Veronica Roth. Eric displays his courage in many different ways. Eric puts his life in danger every day by lying to the faction he leads, communicating with his leader, and through the acts he commits every day. Throughout the book you see Eric’s cunning and bravery displayed over and over again. He talks very tactfully and hides his true intentions well. You can see that Eric is through and through, Erudite. Even though he belongs to a different faction, he is a leader of Dauntless. It can be assumed that Four’s and Eric’s trainers were just as hard as Eric and Four themselves. The trainers must have been clever, clever enough to see that Eric was not what he said he was. Eric was a spy, the first pawn played in Jeanine’s elaborate scheme to take over all five factions. He never faltered once and continued on, knowing that if he was caught, his punishment would be far worse than death. Every day Eric lied to the faces of the Dauntless leaders even though he knew the consequences. He did it to save his true faction, Erudite.
Everyone knows about the geeks, the freaks, the jocks, the preps, and every other Hollywood idolized clique. Each person in the group donates their own similar attributes, which in turn come together to make the group what it is. In “Divergent”, different classes of people are split into ‘factions’, or, in other words, extreme cliques. These like-minded people have their opinions on how the world was corrupted. The group names and their faction missions are as follows: the Erudite (intelligence), the Dauntless (bravery), the Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peacekeepers), and the Candor (the honest), all of which uphold their beliefs by exerting the upmost radicality of their manifestos. Each faction then contributes their own ideological products to help all of society. These groupings work “toward a better society and a better world” (pg.44), however, in the end, they are brutally, and massively abraised with the strong will of one lunatic faction member. Others may say that splitting us into groups of peers that we agree with is a good idea, yet it will not take long until the enemy lies and infiltrates our systems, becoming too powerful for our faction to overcome. This is why we all have to mingle, using our talents together for the betterment of society.
Throughout 1984 and Divergent, conformity and obedience force the characters to go to great lengths in order to follow the basics and rules of the government. Throughout Orwell’s 1984, the individuals of the society hang onto every word, law, and thought of Big Brother. The citizens focus primarily on the Ministries and Party, not forming connections or relationships with others. Each member of a party have certain jobs and clothing assigned to them, separating them for others to easily detect. The same concept lies within the factions of Divergent. Each faction has a different job, and different colors to wear in order to display their role in society. The leaders of each Faction also hold the phrase “faction before blood,” depicting the same messege Big Brother enforces in 1984. Both governments want the individuals to stay within their parties, and do the jobs assigned to them. However, both novels include characters refusing to conform and obey to government rules. In 1984, Winston Smith resents Big Brother, using his knowledge from the Minitrue to reveal the lies the government spreads. Because of the disatisfaction Winston shows towards his government, O’Brien follows him, tortures him, and brainwashes him into conforming like the others. In Divergent, the government leaders label Beatrice Prior as a “divergent,” or one who possesses more than one
Like in many dystopian novels, Divergent has divided different types of people into created class structures to try and perfect humanity and prevent war. These structures are called factions, and people born or switched into them are forced to live their lives and think as the faction demands it. These factions are separated by their character between selflessness, peacefulness, honesty, intelligence, and bravery. Human beings cannot be limited to a single characteristic and one way of thinking. The leaders make it out so the people feel as if they have a choice in what they do with their lives, but the truth is that they are only given the choice to choose between a few pre-determined lifestyles. If they fail initiation going into a new faction, they are forced to live outside of the society; factionless. This system is not a beneficial way to structure a society. The point of these factions is to lead to a better society and a better world, but war and rebellion are inevitable. Having people forced to live in different factions based on how they act and think, and limiting them only to that nature is not better, but ludicrous.
I predict that Tris will discover that Four is also a Divergent, and they will start a rebellion together at the end of this book and beginning of the next one. I think that Four is a Divergent because of how he knew quite quickly that Tris was a Divergent. He didn’t have to scrutinize her he discovered it with ease.
