“Distance Education is about Change” Evolution in computing and information technology has changed the ways of education. With new technology being created for the purpose of education, the traditional teaching practices are becoming a thing of the past. There are fewer students on school campuses but the numbers of enrollees have increased. Although not new to education, it has become more popular as the demands for a higher education seems to be required to improve the ways of life, Distance Education. Different technological platforms are used in distance education and just in the nick of time to impact teaching methods in which communication, connection, student engagement, and interactive learning are fundamental. The amount of students, from first time college students to continuing education that are taking online classes keeps on growing. “More than 6.7 million students—32 percent of total higher education enrollment—took at least one online course through a university during fall 2011, up from roughly 6.1 million students the year prior, according to "Changing Course: Ten Years of Tracking Online Education in the United States." Responses by academic officials from 2,820 colleges and universities, including both for-profit and nonprofit institutions, were included in the annual report”. One method that seems to have enhanced this phenomenon is Social Media. Historically, the first “recognizable social network site launched in 1997,” (Boyd and Ellison, 2007) which was called Sixdegrees.com. Wade immediately demonstrated his aptitude for Problem Solving and Decision Making as the Personnel Division was confronted with numerous challenging responsibilities and limited staff available to meet commitment deadlines. These challenges included hiring 22 deputies and 20 civilian specialists, along with additional support staff. As such, managing the volume of interviews, polygraphs, backgrounds and establishing hiring boards was a task that Wade needed to immediately assume responsibility for, establishing deadlines and orchestrating the flow of activity.
However, due in part to these acquisitions, the Wallace Group faces several problems. The first issue relates to their hiring process and how they choose who to promote. Instead of hiring qualified employees with the proper expertise, they focus more on cutting costs, therefore hiring non-qualified employees. One example of this process is, instead of creating a management development program for training and recruitment of new management, they just promote within. However, they promote technicians to management positions without the proper training, because it's cheaper to do that.
In his article, “Can You Be Education from a Distance?”, James Barszcz effectively weighs the pros and cons of online education compared to the traditional method, while effectively supporting his position with factual information and statistics. While distance education proves to be convenient for students, Barszcz asserts that it eliminates valuable experiences necessary in order to get the most out of the material being learned.

Education has traditionally consisted of a student or group of students receiving instruction from a teacher; with everyone involved in one location. Distance education is changing the way instruction happens today. Distance education is "the acquisition of knowledge and/or skills wherein time and/or space separates the learner and provider" (McMahan 4). Distance education in its most basic sense happens when student(s) are in one location and the teacher(s) are in another location. In traditional education students use textbooks, listen to lectures, and use other locally available resources. In distance education students use a variety of technological resources (that is, interactive video, television, computers, and even audio and video cassettes). Distance education changes the practice of the student coming to the teacher. It gives students and teachers more flexibility and options concerning when and how to study and teach. Distance education "has provided students with more opportunities to participate in a richer, broader educational experience" (Kessler and Keefe 44) by crossing city, state, and international borders.
Just as anything else, social networks were not born in a day, it slowly developed into what is known in today’s society. In the 70’s, Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs) and Usernets were prime communication. BBS is considered the first site that allowed internet users to interact with each other. However, users would have to use a dial-up connection and only one at a time could access the BBS. While Usernets were slightly different. This was a system that allowed users to post articles to newsgroups. Into the 80’s Online Services were created, such as CompuServe, Prodigy and the well-known AOL. These sites simply made the internet “universally accessible in the United States.” Following online services in the late 80’s came Instant Messaging and Chat systems such as Internet Relay Chat, which allowed for sharing links and files. ICQ was also booming around this time, its use was for instant messaging and was “partly” responsible for avatars, emoticons and abbreviations such as LOL and BRB.
