In writing, authors tend to write about the same topics but in different perspectives. Neurologist David Weisman from Pennsylvania is the author of Disposable Heroes. He describes how sports helmets may seem to help on the outside but really there is a lot of internal damage that is caused by physical contact in sports. In another point of view, a writer and pilot for the United States Air Force Society of Wild Weasels, Lane Wallace explains in Do Sports Helmets Help or Hurt how sports safety equipment does not make a huge difference. Sports helmets help to a certain extent, however, injuries can still occur with protection. David Weisman writes about how thrilling it is to watch players tackle one another but the viewers on the side line only see the external effects that it causes and people do not realize the internal effects (Weisman 229). Wearing a helmet when playing sports decreases the risk of injury but does not completely diminish it. Players believe that they have adequate protection to engage in riskier behavior on the field and this is called risk compensation. Helmets contribute to this cause because players believe that the helmet will save them from all injuries that they can sustain during the time they play. In order to change and improve the safety of athletes, people need to look at the sport from many different perspectives.
