Sexual Instinct exists in animals in order for them to reproduce and perpetuate. Animals are believed to be incapable resisting their sexual instinct. Humans though reproduce based on their desire. Evolution of human sexual desires from animal form is that “Only the human developed a different behaviour system, one which included intellectual control over the instincts.” This is seen to show that humans have a desire for sex, but we also have a control to our instinct. In the novel Disgrace by J.M Coetzee, the author states that sexual instinct is a gender construction that can be altered, and not a biological predetermined instinct. Through the use of imagery David altered his thoughts from blaming his desires on instinct to confronting his own mistakes. David has a strong urge towards being a dormant masculine individual. His need to be in control derives from his growing up during the apartheid in South Africa. Davids need for dominance over people followed him post apartheid. When it comes to power, especially in South Africa after Apartheid David shows himself as a dominant figure following the subjugation of black individuals at the time. David’s job as a Professor also led him to pray on individuals he could control. Davids dominance to to prey on females is in comparison with his sexual instict. Coetzee describes Davids urge with the sexual instinct of a dog saying "It was a male. Whenever there was a bitch in the vicinity it would get excited and unmanageable, and with Pavlovian regularity the owners would beat it. This went on until the poor dog didn 't know what to do. At the smell of a bitch it would chase around the garden with its ears flat and its tail between its legs, whining, trying to hide. This is showing that he sees importance in females being independent, away from male presence, and not being at the duty to men. David quotes “ In the novel Disgrace by J.M Coetzee, the author states that sexual instinct is a gender construction that can be altered, and not a biological predetermined instinct. J.M Coetzee shows that sexual identity is not predetermined, but is a trait that can be altered. Through the use of imagery David altered his thoughts from blaming his desires on instinct to confronting his own mistakes. David gender construction is altered through the loss of domination, by losing his superiority in Apartheid his status as a professor and now through being controlled during his daughters rape. Davids sexual Instinct is also altered by his change in gender stereotypes.
