Anorexia: The Role of the Media We will begin first by defining what anorexia is. Anorexia refers to an illness in which an individual has an overwhelming fear of getting fat. The person, therefore, will refuse to eat food and end up growing thinner and thinner. The influence of the media on the spreading of eating disorders cannot be refuted. From a very tender age, we are reinforced by countless images all aiming at making us believe we must be thin to be successful in life. Children are taught by society how they look matter a lot. There has been an increase in the number of children spending time watching televisions, with this increase more and more of them have developed a superficial sense of their personality. The programs in the television will rarely show men and women of ‘average’ body types. The ones on the program include models dressed gorgeously ingraining this notion in the back of the viewer’s mind that this is the kind of life that is good. Those overweight in the media being depicted as the lazy ones who have few or no friends at all. Others shown as the ‘bad guys’. The slender ladies and pumped-up gentlemen portrayed to be the heroes and heroines. Children used to be told that what is inside them is the one that counts but with the emergence of media, this message is not convincing to the children because what they see in the media contradicts the message. In the everyday life we get bombarded with several ideas as to why being fat is undesirable. When one turn on television, the radio and the internet, all that people talk about are how to lose weight and to get that perfect body. This message reaches the small kids.
