If blacks only make up a quarter of the population in Tamps, how is it that they’re mostly the ones who are receiving the tickets? Just because they are on their bikes doesn’t mean that they are up to no good. They are using this strategy as way to deter crime but this is clearly showing discrimination towards the black community. They already suffer enough just to have this on their plate as well. Since they are considered a minority and are at the bottom of the bunk, it becomes easy for society to target them based on what has been said about them. For example names that sound like they are African American are fifty 50% less likely to be called in for a job interview. In the article, “8 reasons – and one powerful video – show why racism is real in America”, by Ana Swanson, she says “In a 2002 study, Marianna Bertrand and Sendhil Mullainathan of the University of Chicago mailed thousands of job applications to reviewers that were identical except for the names. They found that applications with white-sounding names like Emily and Brendan were much more likely to be answered than identical resumes from black-sounding names like Lakisha and Jamal.” (Swanson). Society wants to act like racism and discrimination does not exist but they are very much alive. These stereotypes are the ones creating this problem. It’s unbelievable that the name of someone is actually an element that can affect someone if whether they get the job or not. There are laws that supposedly protect one from discrimination but yet these things still
