In society, people who are different can be quickly judged, taken advantage of, and even isolated. These examples are what happened to Edward in the film Edward Scissorhands directed by Tim Burton. Edward was taken advantage of because of his unique scissors for hands but when he was not needed, he was discarded from society but what kept him safe was Peg accepting him into her family. People with or without differences deserve to be treated with dignity and respect but to also to be nurtured and cared for by family. Society takes advantage of people who are different. Edward is exploited and objectified throughout the film because of his differences. This can be seen when Edward is giving out free haircuts for everyone. He is being objectified and is being used because he has a unique ability that other people do not have. Another example he was objectified was when Jim uses Edward’s ability to break into his house. After Peg accepted Edward into the family, everyone in the family already started to treat him like he was part of it. This is shown when the family was dining at a restaurant and they all shuffled over to the side so Edward could sit down. This shows a sense of belonging and helps Edward to feel accepted into the family. Another example was when they were all at home having dinner and instead of people trying to stay away of Edward like at the start of the film, they sat around him and they were not scared of him. This looks like he is part of the family. Another example that he is accepted into the Bogs family is when everyone sat down and talked about their day. Everyone wants to know about Edward’s day and that shows a sense of belonging and acceptance. The audience should feel glad that Edward has a good family to care and nurture him while he is going through a
