Discrimination During the 20th Century

While the Hazaras were heavily discriminated against throughout the late nineteenth century, the vast majority of this discrimination came about as a result of the rise of the Taliban. With the rise of the Taliban, it brought about a lot of violence towards the Hazara people. The violence that took place towards them included killing civilian within residential areas, such as market places and homes, and by killing them through the use of knives and guns. They went about slaughtering any Hazara people that they could come across. (Phillips 4). The main character within Kite Runner goes about expressing the changes that took place with the rise of the Taliban throughout the novel. “We stayed huddled that way until the early hours of the morning. The shootings and explosions had lasted less than an hour, but they frightened us badly, because none of us had ever heard gunshots in the streets. They were foreign sounds to us them. The generation of Afghan children whose ears would know nothing but the sounds of bombs and gunfire were not yet born… bringing the death of the Afghanistan I knew and marking the start of a still ongoing era of bloodletting.” (Hosseini 35). Amir describes how they spent a night huddled in fear as a result of the gunshots and explosions that had taken place outside of their home. These explosions were a result of the Taliban murdering the Hazara people. He also makes it a point to emphasize how the Taliban will be around for a while and that this is only the beginning of a long era that is to come of discrimination towards the Hazaras as a result of the Taliban. Another way at which the Hazaras were ethnically discriminated towards by the Taliban was through public executions.
